Isaac: How do you sum up 2008 for 13 Cent Kill?
TCK: Death, rebirth, triumph, Jager.
Isaac: What do you feel was the band's biggest accomplishment for 2008?
Travis: We found the members and the sound that Zach and I had been searching for since day one. We tweaked our existing songs and wrote enough new material to begin recording our first full length CD, "Kill Your Neighbor Music."
Isaac: The band was formed in 2004. In your opinion, what has kept the band together all these years?
Travis: HA!! Determination, energy and constant growth.
Zach: Basically, Travis and I have kept the band going, and we've just always tried to find other musicians that we get along with and have the same energy that we have. Right now, everything is great and we
feel we've finally found the energy and excitement that we had when the band was formed in 2004.
Isaac: Describe the music scene in Enid, Oklahoma.
TCK: The music scene in Enid is on the rebound. It's really inconsistent, major peaks were the late 80's - early 90's, late 90's, and now the original bands in town are realizing that they have to work as a team for the improvement of the original music scene. We feel that the scene is currently posed to be the best it's ever been in this town. One of the major reasons for this is that we have a venue, The Underground, that has been very supportive of the original music scene, all genres.
Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why?
Shane: Definitely KISS. My life revolved around KISS when I was a kid. I always wanted to be Space Ace.
Ricardo: Metallica, I heard Kirk Hammet's soloing and I thought, man, I gotta do that.
Zach: Tool, I had just bought my first drum kit and when I saw Tool I was mesmerized by Danny Carey's skills.
Travis: Can't sum it up into one, gotta be four, take the diversity, mix them together, Nirvana, Ozzy, Sevendust and Mike Patton.
Isaac: Let's talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry?
TCK: Zach and a superior Nachos recipe, and, a sound we truly believe to be our own. Our live performances are energy packed. We don't just stand there; we give the fans a show. Expect the unexpected, because anything can happen at any time. We have a fresh sound, something for
everyone, from the head banger to the stripper.
Isaac: There are two guitarists (Shane Laubhan and Ricardo Montoya) for the band. How are the two of you able to work together to create a harmonious sound?
Ricardo: Travis writes most of the songs on bass and we just pick up his groove and work around the riffs.
Shane: Practice is the majority of it. One of us comes up with something and the other just goes with it.
Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?
TCK: Well, we would create a super group and work with them. Mike Patton and Devin Townsend on vocals, Scott Ian on rhythm guitar, John Petrucci on lead, Danny Carey on percussion, Arif Mirabdolbaghi on bass, Trent Reznor on keys. Why would we work with them? Because they would kick ass!!
Isaac: How would each member of the band describe the band's music to others?
Zach: It's experimental, it's got a little funk, metal, progressive rock, and it's a little Jagery.
Ricardo: It's good shit. It's a new breed of hard rock/heavy metal. If you smoke it, you'll get really high.
Travis: Energy, emotion, porn metal, with a twist of horror.
Shane: It's a different kind of metal. Something fresh. You can dance if you want, you can head bang if you want. Come to the show, experience it, you won't be disappointed.
Isaac: What is your definition for Metal Music and why are you so drawn to this genre?
TCK: Well, there are many types of metal, but really, they are all based on the same principle. Metal is a release of energy, anger, rebellion and freedom, and it all just comes out in the form of music that makes you move, makes you groove, makes you kill your neighbor. It's a way of life, people are just metal. We grew up listening to this stuff and I don't think we would be drawn to anything else, this
is what we do.
Isaac: What can fans expect from 13 Cent Kill in 2009?
TCK: Well, one thing that's for certain is that our fans living outside of our city boundary will be seeing more of us. We've just recently played our first out-of-state show and hope to play many more
before the end of the year. Our live show is getting better everyday, so we're pretty stoked to get out there and do our thing in some other states. I think it's safe to say Texas and Arkansas will be seeing us
very soon, California in the near future as well. The biggest news for 2009 is our CD, "Kill Your Neighbor Music." Our fans have been waiting patiently and we've finally been able to get it out there on the
digital download sites. The physical CD should be available before the end of May 2009.
Isaac: Time for some shout outs to your family, friends, and fans?
TCK: Our family, aka fans, are kick ass. They support the hell out of us and we thank them often. We would definitely have to throw a shout out to our local venue, The Underground. Other than that, we love everyone that comes to our shows, buys our shit, and the venues that let us play. If everything works out, we'll have more people coming to our shows, buying our shit and more venues letting us play. Also, appreciate the hell out of the bands that share stages with us.
Isaac: Final words from 13 Cent Kill?
TCK: Come out and catch us live. We've often been told that our live show is the best representation of TCK. So come find us. Give us your thoughts and have a beer with us...but you're buyin', were broke...buy our shit.
