1undread
1undread has created one of the coolest sounds that I have heard in a long time. The fusion of many popular genres into a unique project is what you will get when you listen to the music of 1undread. Never fitting into one category, 1undread has something for everyone. In this recent feature with our Webzine, members of 1undread speak about their musical journey. Here is what developed.
Isaac: How do you sum up 2008 for 1undread?
1undread: 2008 was a year of growth and realization for 1undread. We started the year promoting our album "Revolutionary Dub Type Thing" and finished the year recording our new album "Ear Dance". While "Revolutionary Dub Type Thing" was a dark and introspective album "Ear Dance" is more organic and soulful.
Isaac: What do you feel was your biggest accomplishment for 2008?
1undread: The recording of "Ear Dance" although we did have fun promoting "Revolutionary Dub Type Thing" including an interview on a Netherlands radio station.
Isaac: Describe the music scene in Bermuda.
1undread: The scene here is fuelled by Dance Hall (Reggae), Hip Hop, Soft Rock, and some Socca. We are anomalies on the island--Kind of like a banana in a cornfield.
Isaac: Elaborate on the concept behind 1undread.
1undread: We are electronicjazztriphopdubstep type thing. Improvisation is a HUGE part of what we do and no performance is every repeated. It has to do with emotion and the feel of the moment.
Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why?
Nic: Nina Simone meant a lot when I was growing up; at the same time I was listening to Punk, Reggae and Jazz. I was in a funk band and do like a lot of Funk. I like African Jazz i.e. people like Fella Kuti. I'm also into Latin, in various forms, St. Germane, Square pusher, and Klute who by the way gave us the best review of a demo that we have had to date.
Brian: I grew up listing to Rap and Reggae but then moved on to listening to Metal, the heavier the better. Bands like Mettalica, Slayer, Napalm Death ect. Then I was introduced to the world of electronic music through Skinny Puppy and was then exposed to the likes of General Levy and Tricky. Eventually, I became a Drum n Bass fan but as always I gravitated to the extremes of the Genre and started to listen to Square pusher, Edit, Tim Exile ect, but we never quite imitated. We always stayed true to ourselves. Of course, going to school and studying Art Music and Jazz probably had some influence.
Isaac: Let's talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry?
1undread: We are bringing a breath of fresh air, a new sound, to rearrange the grey matter in your head.
Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?
1undread: Roy Ayres. It would be a dream to work with such a musical legend. He is another major influence to us.
Isaac: How would you describe your music to others?
1undread: Reggae meets Lounge Music (the jazz kind), meets Moby (not in the Dick kind) in a blender with a strawberry on top.
Isaac: What is your definition for Rock Music?
1undread: The music my parents listened to.
Isaac: What type of feedback have you received from your album titled Ear Dance?
1undread: "Ear Dance" has been called visionary, incredible, and futuristic, comparisons have been made with Roni Size, Everything but the Girl, and Tricky.
1undread: We are working with a local TV station doing our own music show, as well as working on our new album. We have also been invited to a major international electronic music Festival but couldn't make it, so we are drying the tears and looking forward to other gigs.
Isaac: Time for some shout outs to your family, friends, and fans…
