Bunmi
Bunmi is going to offer something rewarding and fulfilling to the music industry: originality. The sensational Pop Singer has created a powerful presence with her unique take on Pop music. With a voice that is unparalleled to most, Bunmi's music is something that is refreshing and innovated. If you want to know her style, then think of Tina Turner meets Tori Amos meets Suzanne Vega. In this recent interview with our Webzine, Bunmi speaks candidly about her music.
Isaac: What was the best part of 2008 for you musically?
Bunmi: I'm doing a lot of performing at the moment to promote my new album so it is really great to get people's reaction to my live sound whether it is acoustic or with a full band performing energizes me.
Isaac: What do you feel was your biggest accomplishment for 2008?
Bunmi: I'm super excited about the release of my CD Paper Dolls, Glass Houses. It's been getting great buzz and I want everybody to hear the album. The songs from the album are really songs from my heart, from my life, from the wickedly crazy things I've experienced. I can't talk about this stuff in a normal conversation, but I can make my point in my album. I always hope that when people listen to it that they are able to see a little bit of themselves and their lives in my songs.
Isaac: Describe the music scene in area.
Bunmi: It's vast. It's competitive. It's beautiful. It feels like everything and nothing at all is possible, but it requires a million teeny-tiny baby steps and you're always taking two steps back for every one of those baby steps that you take. I feel very lucky to be breaking into the music scene in Toronto. There is so much talent that converges into a big city like this and it really forces everyone to step up their game. That said; I really try to focus on the music and the art. If you write a decent song, it won't matter what music scene you're in because everyone loves a good song!
Isaac: What has been the best venue to perform at and why?
Bunmi: There are too many to name. Rockie Raccoons gave me start when it came to performing live. This was the springboard for everything. This is where all my new songs get tested and tweaked...
Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music
industry and why?
Bunmi: Hmmmm.... I have a lot of them having grown up listen to all types of music. Recently and consistently, Damien Rice... for his bitingly honest songs, at least they seem honest... ha ha... His career also seemed to take shape so organically. Ani DiFranco is another musician whom I really admire as well.
I watched and listened to and LOVED a lot of musicals when I was younger. Cole Porter KILLED me with the way he could write songs and turn a phrase. Juliette Lewis knows how to work sh*t out! She channels heaven and earth with she performs!
Isaac: Let's talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry?
Bunmi: Fire, energy and my power... I write songs about love and about being a woman and about relationships and I write and sing them like I was having a conversation. These are words and phrases that the listener will understand. I'm not really a read-between-the-lines type of woman. I'm kinda like a Joan Rivers, but with a bit of diplomacy.
Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?
Bunmi: Aside from Joan Rivers? Ha ha! Just one?! That's to hard a question. I don't know if I've want to work with just one artist or group; I love so many -- TOO many! I want to work with innovators, go-getters and impossible dream-believers who make things happen.
Isaac: How would you describe your music to others?
Bunmi: You're in my head and I'm in yours... and we kinda freak each other out.
Isaac: What type of feedback have you received from fans about your music?
Bunmi: They love me and say they want to marry me and have my babies. I accept their love, seriously consider the marriage proposals, and instead of babies, I offer up my songs. This seems to satisfy them greatly...
Isaac: What can fans expect from you in the next five years?
Bunmi: More shows + More CDs= More music. Just expect more, a lot more! I want to experiment with new songs and new sounds. I really want to have fun with this.
Isaac: Time for some shout outs to your family, friends, and fans and final words…
Bunmi: I generally like to have the last word. It's a bad habit of mine, but thank you for indulging me.
