Since 2006, four talented kids, James Linck, Steve and Dave Kendzorski, and Ben Sturley, from Detroit, Michigan have been bringing the noise to the music industry. The four guys merged together formed the group known as James and The Rainbros. With their catchy lyrics and electrifying pulsating sound, James and The Rainbros are accumulating a loyal fan base. In a recent interview with front man James Linck, he talks one on one with our Webzine in this funny and witty spotlight.
Isaac: please take a moment to elaborate on who you are and your upbringing.
James: Well, we're all mid west kids.
Isaac: Was there any one musician that spoke to your heart so profoundly, you were inspired to do your own thing?
James: There were many. I remember my dad singing Harry Belafonte, Cat Stevens, and Bob
Dylan when I was young. Something about the way those guys sung was so gallant that
their songs kind of translated into what being a man meant to me.
Isaac: Which singer/group would you say you would most like to do a duet with?
James: My girlfriend...
Isaac: What singer/songwriter do you most connect with?
James: I love the stuff that Jim James of My Morning Jacket is saying in his songs. I
often find myself having that feeling of... "I could of would of wrote this one if I had
the words." But I also connect really deeply with M. Ward's songs, as well as Mason
Jennings'.
Isaac: Out of your entire song collection that you've written thus far, which song(s)
would you say is/are the most personal/meaningful to you?
James: Haha, probably the ones we're not performing yet. But I don't know; the songs
start to take on different meanings to me as the time passes. They're all really
meaningful.
Isaac: Which singers/groups do you enjoy/like from some of today's music genres?
James: I like my buddy Matt's songs. He's going to be coming out with a record under the name
Mr. 31 sometime this summer. It's going to be half hip hop tracks and half folk songs.
Isaac: What charities are you involved with or support and why should people
get involved?
James: We're not really involved with any charities regularly but we're doing a SEAC
(Students Environmental Action Coalition) benefit next Friday and the past two years
we've played benefits for the Michigan NORML chapter.
Isaac: Have you (or would you ever consider) writing a song about any of today's particular world issues/problems? If so, what world issue would speak to you the most to write about?
James: You can't really write about what you don't know and it's plain to see to when somebody is trying to do that. I just got to stick to writing about my world and hopefully if I keep doing it from the heart, it'll transcend.
Isaac: What is the main reason why should people listen to your music?
James: 'cause it's good...
Isaac: How far into the creation of a song do you share any of it with anyone? Who would you play it for? Would it be a chorus, a verse and chorus, or a complete song?
James: I'll share a verse that might become a chorus that might become a song that might
become a picture that might become a movie that might become forgotten to anyone who's
interested. Mostly to Steve, Dave, and Ben though... the other guys in the group that I
write with.
Isaac: How much do you let others "mess around with" one of your new songs?
James: Usually as much as they want. The other band members, that is. If I have something that is pretty heavy in my head usually they can tell. We don't have a whole lot of issues with that cause I think we know each other well enough to not stomp on each others toes.
Isaac: Do you have to be a tortured soul to be a singer-songwriter?
James: No, I think you probably just have to be a soul.
Isaac: Are your songs strictly autobiographical or are they embroidered autobiography?
James: I'm not telling.
Isaac: How long does it take you to process your emotions and turn them into songs?
James: It takes a couple lifetimes.
Isaac: Where can folks locate you on the Internet?
James: http://myspace.com/jamesandtherainbros
Isaac: The best piece of advice you actually followed?
James: Just do what you think you should do.
Isaac: Give Shutouts to your family and friends.
James: Hi mom...
Isaac: Last but certainly not least, what are you working on, now?
James: We're working on a record with 12-14 songs that we're doing live right now... and probably a few more that we haven't written yet. It'll be out this summer.
