New Music Spotlight
May 2009 Edition

Jason Stegenga

Jason Stegenga

Sonicbids

Jason Stegenga is the type of musician that you are going to instantly love. His charm, vocals, and overall great attitude are only a plus for this extremely talented musician. In this special close-up on this artist, Jason and I speak about everything from music to family to performing. Enjoy this great spotlight!

Isaac: How do you sum up 2008 for Jason Stegenga?

Jason: It was an exciting year. We were able to play at a few incredible venues and meet some amazing musicians. I was able to do a lot of writing, exploring much more vivid imagery. I think that everyone will enjoy the new album, which is being recorded this fall!!!

Isaac: What do you feel was your biggest accomplishment for 2008?

Jason: I think making the move from being in sales to the music industry. It is always a hard decision and transition when you choose to follow your passions. I think that they normally involve a substantial amount of risk. But nothing worth having is easy to get, right?

Isaac: Describe the music scene in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

Jason: Well, Falcon Heights is a suburb of Minneapolis. So, the music scene in the Twin Cities is awesome. There are an abundance of bars, clubs and coffeeshops that have been designed for live music. The local music scene is really supported in the area, as well. With so many great bands around, Dr. Mambo's Combo being my personal favorite, it's a place you can hear and support just about anything you want to.

Isaac: What has been your favorite venue to perform at and why?

Jason: I would definitely have to say Beaner's Central in Duluth, MN. Jason Wussow is the easiest venue owner to deal with. He has been touring for years and understands how the whole process works, which makes it nicer for those of us trying to do the same. It has a great vibe, food and drink menu and draws a pretty dedicated crowd.

Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why?

Jason: Well, it's easy to say that Neil Young or Bob Dylan are influences because they are for a lot of people. I would say that my biggest influence has been Dispatch. I think the way they have handled their success has been inspiring. Not only were they one of the biggest independent bands I've ever heard of, but they have been able to raise so much awareness and funding for causes they believe in. They do a lot of work in Nicaragua and Zimbabwe through the Dispatch Foundation and Love, Light, and Melody. I hope to be involved in benefit concerts like they put on at some point in my career. There is so much more than success and recognition!!!

Isaac: Let's talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry?

Jason: I think that I bring a voice that forces people to think about themselves and their worldviews. I have been privileged enough to travel quite a bit and those experiences, in cultures outside of our own; have allowed me to critically evaluate our ideals. I think that the music scene needs more challenging artists. By that, I mean that we need people that aren't just out to write the next single. Deeper thought and imagery and experience are something that I think can really move people to change and become the change we need!

Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?

Jason: I think this answer is obvious from one of the previous questions. It would have to be Dispatch. Helping to raise awareness and funding for worthy causes would be incredible! Not only that, but they are very talented and anytime you can be around better musicians, you are progressing.

Isaac: What type of responses have you received from your Self Titled (2008) CD, Jason Stegenga?

Jason: They have been very positive. I think the tracks people have liked the most are The Night, Picturum, and Lullabe. I think that the next album will really showcase how much we've progressed!!!

Isaac: What is your definition for Folk and why are you so drawn to this genre?

Jason: In terms of a definition for Folk…I'm not really sure what I'd say there. I think that for me, Folk really means raw. The lyrics aren't all polished and neat. I really, really like that people can speak their minds and portray their stories within this genre. I think that's something that speaks to me, so I try to offer that. I'm like an open book…you ask a question and I'll answer it for you, even if it might make you feel awkward.

Isaac: Where can fans locate you at online?

Jason: Well, I will list out the sites below, but we have a site that's coming this fall that I want to make sure people know about. It's going to be our "grand central station," if you will.

Isaac: What can fans expect from Jason Stegenga in 2009?

Jason: They can definitely expect a new album. Like I said, everyone is really going to enjoy our new material!!! We are also expecting to do some more regional touring. So, if you are in the Midwest, let us know you want us to come and play in your area and we'll do our best to make it!

Isaac: Time for some shout outs to your family, friends, and fans?

Jason: My brothers are always incredibly supportive of my music…so I have to give them one! My parents are always looking out for me, even when they are worried that being a musician isn't going to pay the bills. The Minnesota crew…you know who you are…I love you guys!

Isaac: Final words from Jason Stegenga...

Jason: You know…I can't wait to meet more folks around the country who enjoy what I'm doing! Thank you for the support. Love always, be patient, and may grace abound in your lives!!!
