Jehan
Jehan
Indie Folk/Pop Singer/Songwriter Jehan is certainly making music that many music lovers will appreciate and enjoy. His ability to capture many emotions through his music is one of his biggest appeals. He blends nicely throughout his music a mixture of folk, acoustics, and pop added with his amazing vocals will entertain fans all over the world. Here is a recent interview that our Webzine completed with the artist. Enjoy!
Isaac: What was the best part of 2008 for you musically?
Jehan: There was a whole bunch of things but the best was probably recording the EP. After years of idle dreams, it's incredible to finally take a risk. Starting out at the bottom with dingy pubs and busking in tunnels, it's always great to find yourself seeing something through.
Isaac: What do you feel was your biggest accomplishment for 2008?
Jehan: After a year which included over a hundred gigs, it was amazing to finally start getting better venues and notice the slow growth of a following. It was baby steps but they added up. The last gig of the year was at the Basement which one of the most prestigious venues in Sydney. Supporting local band Saving Grace to a packed house was a big experience.
Isaac: Describe the music scene in area.
Jehan: I'm from Sydney but I'm now living in Melbourne. Sydney's a tough scene. There aren't enough people looking for live music so venues start to get predatory and the musician is the first to lose out. Melbourne is a lot better. There is a thriving arts scene and an audience that looks for something more than a bunch of Matchbox 20 covers.
Isaac: What has been the best venue to perform at and why?
Jehan: Probably the Basement. The venue has had a host of international artists and the vibe is perfect. The exact opposite of certain other places I've had the pleasure of playing at. When you've played to drunkards who try and request Wonderwall while you're in the middle of a song, you start to appreciate the good gigs.
Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why?
Jehan: My favorite artists are Sigur Ros, Bon Iver, Radiohead, Damien Rice, Jose Gonzalez, Michael Nyman and many others. I want to achieve the intensity of their music. When music is honest and comes from somewhere powerful, there is something about it that hits you in a way no overproduced formula ever could.
Isaac: Let's talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry?
Jehan: I'm just one man and I'm doing it myself. There are enough artists out there pushing themselves on the masses. I'll be doing it person by person playing around. If people are after honesty, I can certainly deliver that.
Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?
Jehan: Sigur Ros. They have this amazing soundscape to their music that I would love to experience in person. The next EP I release will have a sound that goes a few steps in that direction.
Isaac: How would you describe your music to others?
Jehan: Acoustic folk indie pop. But I am a pretentious git (laughs). I don't know. It's hard to classify at times. Generally, I avoid those questions.
Isaac: What type of feedback have you received from fans about your music?
Jehan: Kind words in many forms. I really appreciate the fact that many people who listen seem to "get it". It's important to feel that people empathize with your music. People often spot my influences and feel it's honest, which is always my intention.
Isaac: What can fans expect from you in the next five years?
Jehan: World domination. . . . . well, not exactly. I'll be travelling around the world with my guitar playing gigs. I guess they can expect me to come knocking.
Isaac: Time for some shout outs to your family, friends, and fans and final words…
Jehan: Thanks guys! You make my life. I'd be crumpled mess without you all!
