JC Interview Exclusive: (May 2009) Rising Star Kevan Kase
Kevan Kase
Kevan Kase is one of the top leading rising young actors in Hollywood. He has the makeup of all the right elements including boyish good looks, southern charm, and enormous talents. The talented actor is making a big splash both in TV & Movies and in Stage. He also has a deep love for Martial Arts and loves to take on challenging roles. In this exclusive interview with our Webzine, Kevan speaks about his life and what he loves to do the most.
Isaac: Hi Kevan, I wanted to first wish you a wonderful day and thank you for taking the time to complete this interview. Let's get started with the interview. You have build up quite an impressive resume in both movies and stage. Elaborate a little about your upbringing in Alberta, Canada.
Kevan: My Grandfather raised me on the south side of Edmonton Alberta. My favourite things growing up were taking Drama in High School and training in Taekwondo at Edmonton Tiger Taekwondo where I found my second family.
Isaac: I read in your online bio that you grew up playing many sports, but it was Martial Arts that you were able to find your real talent. Describe what has drawn you to Martial Arts and why do you love this sports.
Kevan: I love that in martial arts the biggest opponent you face is yourself. It is your discipline and strength of character that helps you become the best you can be. It gave me focus, confidence, patients, and inner strength.
Isaac: You also held a 1st Dan Black belt in Taekwondo, won numerous competitions across Canada, and taught professionally at a local club. What were the rewards from being able to fulfill your life doing the things you loved?
Kevan: Happiness and a feeling of accomplishment. I promised myself I would only do the things that made me happy even if I had to struggle financially. I did not want to become one of those people who hated going to work every day just because they made a lot of money. That un-happiness spills over into other aspects of one's life and is very much like poison.
Isaac: What has been your favorite character to date that you have played and why?
Kevan: Eric in "In The Boom Boom Room" by David Rabe. The character had a few personality quirks that I did not admire that much but it was a great experience and I learned a lot from playing him in the stage production.
Isaac: Who has been your favorite actor/actress to work with on-screen and why?
Kevan: When I first started in the business, I worked as a full-time stand-in on "The Chronicles of Riddick" where I got to work with Vin Deisel. He blew me away with his work ethic and appreciation for everyone on set. I remember him stopping production for almost 2hrs to work out a scene with another actor and the director so everyone was happy and on the same page with what they wanted to do in the scene. There was another time where after shooting the last scene of a 14 hour work day he raced down to extras holding to thank over 100 background performers for being a part of the project.
Isaac: Did you have any inputs into how your characters you have portrayed would play out in movies/films? If so, how?
Kevan: Well, whenever I look at a script, certain things pop into my mind of what I want to do and things I want to portray. I have been lucky that most of the Directors I have worked with liked my initial instincts. The Directors are trying to tell a story as well and sometimes a performance has to be guided in a different direction to accomplish this which I am always open to. Making a film is a team effort.
Isaac: You landed a recurring role on ABC's teen drama Life As We Know It?. What factor contributed to you wanting to perform in this TV series? What drew you to your role in this series?
Kevan: It was a fun character and quite different to whom I was in High School.
Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work in another TV series, would you do it; why or why not?
Kevan: I would love to be a character on a television right now. There are so many amazing shows out at the moment with some amazing writers telling amazing stories. There is also so much growth for characters on series. Who they were in season one can be completely different then who they are in season 3 or who they become by season 8. I find that very exciting.
Isaac: One of my favorite TV series/specials that you starred in was Battlestar Galactica "Final Cut". How did you come about getting the role of Pvt. Scott Kelso?
Kevan: My agent came across the breakdown for the show and thought it would be a good character for me and a great opportunity knowing I was a fan of the show.
Isaac: Where you nervous to tackle this role?
Kevan: I like to call it "excitement." LOL. And I hope that feeling never goes away.
Isaac: What type of feedback from Battlestar Galactica fans have you received from playing the role of Pvt. Scott Kelso?
Kevan: All positive. Which, I am very appreciative of.
Isaac: Do you think that you would ever want to expand your role as an entertainer such as directing or producing?
Kevan: I would love to explore all facets of the business. I have already produced 2 plays here in Vancouver and have a few pet writing projects I have been tinkering with for a while now.
Isaac: You had a busy last year (2008). Were you happy with what you completed professionally for 2008?
Kevan: Very and I look forward to doing even more in the upcoming years.
Isaac: What are some of your major projects that you have in the works for 2009?
Kevan: I would like to shoot a few music videos for my friends who are extremely talented musicians, finish writing a short with my best friend we started back in 2008, I will be jumping back on stage at the end of August playing Robert in Brad Fraser's "Love and Human Remains," and would love to travel to Australia sometime this year and test out the market there.
Isaac: Final words from Kevan Kase?
Kevan: "Happiness is not a brilliant climax to years of grim struggle and anxiety. It is a long succession of little decisions simply to be happy in the moment." ~ J. Donald Walters.
