Isaac: Hello Kevin! Our Webzine is super excited to have you featured on Junior’s Cave. Let’s get started. Were you always interesting in acting or did you happen to stumble across it?
Kevin: Hello! Acting has been a major factor in my life since I first experienced it as a child. I was eight and a youth theater opened up next to my school. Before that, I probably didn’t even know it existed, but once I’d had a taste I was hooked. I performed three or four times a year after that and it wasn’t long before I knew there was no other career for me.
Isaac: What has been one of the best rewarding experiences you can talk about from acting?
Kevin: In 2008, I was invited to attend the Berlinale Talent Campus in Berlin. It’s a weeklong series of workshops and seminars taught by some of the world’s leading film professionals that run alongside the Berlin International Film Festival. They invite 350 people from 115 countries to come and live and work together for the week. I was one of only 19 actors invited that year so it was a real honor. The training was fantastic and to be surrounded by 349 producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, composers, animators and other actors was really amazing.
Isaac: That’s too cool.
Isaac: What has been one of the worst experiences from acting that you have experienced?
Kevin: I’ve been very fortunate in my acting life; I’ve never really had any bad experiences. I hear some horror stories but I’m glad to say I’ve managed to avoid them myself. I guess the hardest thing is the really close calls. You get used to the “rejection”, there can only be one actor for each role, but the first time you’re down to the last two for a biggie, you feel that one! You can’t help but be excited knowing you’re so close, so it stings a little when they go the other way. Of course, it’s good to remember that someone else is feeling that way when they choose you too!
Isaac: Of all of the projects you have worked on so far, what do you feel has been your favorite project that you have completed and why?
Kevin: I’ve had some great experiences over the years and I love working with new people and digging into new characters, but I think the one that gave me the greatest sense of achievement was when I played Leo Murphy in Four Country Roads. It was a play I did in the next town over from where I grew up. I’d been away working for a while and it was great to get home and play surrounded by old friends. It was a playful comedy and a fun role, but the real reward came each night after the show let out and there’d be a crowd of familiar faces waiting to say hello. Seeing the happiness on their faces and hearing all of them laugh and talk about the show was so rewarding. You sometimes get that at other shows but I think people often feel they’d be imposing or annoying if they approached the actors after a performance, but I’ve always loved talking to them – especially if they liked the show, haha!!
Isaac: What movie/film do you consider a masterpiece and if you had the opportunity to make something similar briefly describe what type of film it would be?
Kevin: Wow, that’s a doosey! I’ve been a film addict all my life and I dare say I’ve been questioned if not mocked for just as long for some of my top ten film picks. I’m an action junkie, but also something of a romantic, and you can’t beat a good laugh… The top of my list has had Die Hard, Back to the Future and Driving Miss Daisy up there for years now – Jessica Tandy was amazing, I always wanted to work with her, and I’m not giving up on Bruce or Michael J. Wow, you really have me stumped… Lately, I’ve been watching a lot of sci-fi so maybe I’ll take the easy out and say I’d love to perform in a 5th Alien movie. Directed by Ridley Scott of course!
Isaac: Of course. Haha!
Isaac: What type of roles do you find to be the most fun portraying and why?
Kevin: I’ve had a lot of fun over the years, and funnily enough I seem to have almost had two separate careers. On stage I play a lot of comedy – I’m a major fan of old French farce – while on screen I’ve done a lot of action. I’m an advanced certified actor combatant, trained in all swords, sticks, knives and unarmed combat for stage and screen. It comes in very handy for prat-falls and slapstick in comedy and then has obvious uses for action. I love playing the hero, with evil villain roles a close second. I think every actor is happy just to be working.
Isaac: What do you enjoy the most about performing live in front of an audience while on stage and why?
Kevin: Live performance is charged with an energy that you can’t get anywhere else. I imagine athletes experience something similar before a big competition. It’s that knowledge that there are no second chances, get it right now or forget about it. It’s pressure, but its good pressure.
Isaac: How do you handle the stress of being in entertainment industry; what do you do when you are not acting for fun and relaxation?
Kevin: That there is stress in this business is undeniable, but it’s like the old saying goes, “find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”. Similar to acting, where I search inside myself to find character, I’ve always loved sports where I must dig deep to overcome obstacles. I surf, rock-climb and cycle. If I’m not on a wave, a rock or a bike I’m probably in the cinema – “researching”!
Isaac: What do you want to achieve for your career in the entertainment business?
Kevin: There’s been two parts to my dream for a long time. One is to be a professional actor working at the highest level and the second is not to need to do anything else. To perform in film that can inspire and entertain children and adults in the same way I was inspired and entertained is the ultimate goal. To give back and give more is what it’s all about…
Isaac: What are some currently projects you are working on now?
Kevin: Right now I’ve got a comedy sci-fi show and a horror in the desert coming up. I’m also attached to star in a film in southern Asia for German director Juliane Block; I met her while at the Berlinale in 2008. I’m very excited by travel and eventually want to work on all continents.
Isaac: Words of wisdom and final thoughts….
Kevin: Know what you want and go for it. Never give up. If you have doubts, you’re in trouble, consider them in depth and discover their source, then root them out. If you want it you can get it, and you’ll know every step of the way what you should do next, unfortunately each step will most likely be just outside your comfort zone, but if it were easy everyone would do it.
