Kustom

The Internet has played an integral role in discovering new and exciting talented artists. This next act is certainly combining the mixture of R&B and Hip-Hop to a perfect unity. Coming from the Historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, Kustom is a dynamic duo of raw talent that promises to entertain, delight, and thrill their fans. Check out this Q&A that I had the pleasure to do with Michael Polk from Kustom.

Band Members:
Michael Polk - "M 2 Da P"
A.J. Harley - "A Jizzle"

Q. What is your name? When and where were you born?

A. My name is Michael Polk, and I was born in Charleston, SC.

Q. How did you learn to play (sing) this kind of music?

A. I have about 15 years of piano and drum experience on my back. I simply learned how to record it well on my own.

Q. When did you start to learn? (How old were you?)

A. I started fooling around with a program called Sony Acid Pro about 4 years ago (when I was 16).

Q. Where did you live at the time?

A. I live at my house in Charleston where I do all of my production.

Q. How long have you been actively playing this kind of music?

A. I have been greatly influenced by several artists, but I try to produce my own style. I have been successfully recording this type of music for about 10 years.

Q. What is it about this kind of music that makes it different from other types?

A. It’s something different that you don't hear on the radio all the time nor does the almighty dollar drive its exposure. It’s a well mixed genre of Hip-Hop and R&B that has singing with complimentary rap parts in both the chorus and the verse.

Q. Are there different styles of playing your type of music?

A. Of course, especially when you try to involve each sub-genre of Hip-Hop.

Q. When and where do you usually play music?

A. We do a lot shows for clubs and parties.

Q. Do you ever earn money by playing music?

A. Most of our income is channeled through live performances.

Q. 10. Do you play alone or with others?

A. We like to do shows with other acts, but sometimes other acts have clashing styles of music and therefore, bring different fans.

Q. Are there others in this locale who play the same kind of music? What are their names and types of musical instruments they play?

A. I am not sure of any other artist(s) with our style of music.

Q. Have you passed your tradition on to others, who and when? Why is this important to you?

A. We haven't really been around long enough to initiate tradition, but we hope to make it happen.

Q. What is your favorite song or tune to play?

A. The song that is most amusing for us to play is "Do Ya Drill" as it really gets everyone moving.

Q. What makes a performance/song good? How do you judge a performance/song?

A. It’s gotta be catchy and have that "it" factor. Transitions from each segment are also very important. Also, when the beat changes; that makes it interesting.

Q. Do you have anything else you would like to add?

A. The Internet is one of the most efficient and effective ways of promoting or exposing bands to others. We would like thank all of the parenting companies who help independent artists like ourselves for making this all happen. You guys got love for life. One!
