JC Gospel Today recently had the distinct pleasure to interview a man of God who is delivering a powerful message about God’s message of love through his music. Meet Larry P, Christian & Hip-Hop Rapper in this special spotlight. Enjoy!

Isaac: Let’s get started with this interview. How has 2010 been for you so far?

Larry P: 2010 has been a very creative and motivating year for me. In the midst of learning new things, it has also been packed with a lot of productivity as far as finishing my project. Not only that, God has been blessing me and my family tremendously and I look forward to the rest of the year.

Isaac: Out of all of your influences, who would you enjoy working with? And why?

Larry P: I think I would love to work with Marvin Sapp. He is a much anointed man of God and I think we could put a unique, but inspiring, piece of music together. Think about it, Marvin Sapp doing a hook on a gospel rap track; that will be hot and very diverse!

Isaac: What can you say has been the biggest accomplishment so far? with your music career?

Larry P: First of all, finishing my project. Second, being able to be multi-talented to where I save myself lots of time and money.

Isaac: Are you happy with were you are at with your music career at the moment?

Larry P: So far I am happy, but not content with it. I always have the desire to want to do better at mostly anything I do. I still want to reach more audience with my music and encourage more people. I also have a deep desire to do my music full time as well.

Isaac: What draws you to want to play the type of music that you do?

Larry P: I love to rap and I enjoy the creativity of it. The production of it motivates and keeps me going. Also, my love for Christ and what He has done/doing for me, I got to tell somebody. Why not tell the world how God set me free and how I live my life accordingly. I run this race in order to allow God to set others free. After God saved me, why not give my talent back to Him to edify His glory!

Isaac: What do you feel it takes to play this type of music that you play?

Larry P: It takes having a strong passion to do God’s will and hard dedication. It also takes courage to stand for what you believe in when others don’t. Being bold is not an option!

Isaac: How do you handle people in the music industry who promise you things but do not deliver?

Larry P: I tend stay positive in that situation and still keep that person in mind for future contact. They may have forgotten about or overlooked me; therefore, being persistent never hurts anyone.

Isaac: If you had the opportunity to do one cover, what cover would you do and why? How would you put your own spin on this cover?

Larry P: I would probably do a cover of a traditional/contemporary gospel song with a unique gospel rap twist, but still have that traditional feel as well. Based upon my experience with God and what I’ve been through, maybe the song “Never Would Have Made It” by Marvin Sapp would be a good cover.

Isaac: What does it take to be a good songwriter?

Larry P: It takes much patience and a creative imagination. What works best for me is when I allow the music track to describe what I will write about. Music has hidden words already in it, it just need someone with an ear to interpret what the music is trying to express. I tend to listen, interpret, and then write!

Isaac: How difficult is it to juggle music, family and work obligation and life in general? Explain.

Larry P: Hard! It is similar to budgeting money, but you are budgeting time instead. You can’t neglect one from the other; you have to accommodate each of them. Sometimes it gets frustrating, but I have to remember what drives me. Keeping God first always keeps me encouraged.

Isaac: What is your definition of being an Indie artist/band?

Larry P: Being determined and love what you do as an artist. Always remembering what drives and motivates you is critical to becoming successful. By being an indie artist/band, the music industry requires more work from you and you have to maintain a positive attitude in the midst of any negative blows that comes your way. A good definition that describes an indie would be a passionate striver.

Isaac: Where can fans access your music online?

Larry P: My release date is August 31st and once released it will be available everywhere online (ITunes, Amazon, Napster, Rhapsody, CDBaby, and many more). As of right now, my music is available at my website (www.larrypmusic.com). I also have physical distribution at brick and mortar retail stores; therefore, my music will be available for special order at most traditional stores as well. My physical distributor is: Super D Distribution and Amazon.

Isaac: 2011 will be?

Larry P: 2011 will be a more interesting for me as I move forward into the industry. Making new contacts and more networking I plan to do to further branding my name. I expect to expand more and reach new areas with this release. A year of prosperity!
