Instantly hooked by the band's melodic rock vide Madeline Speak is certainly one of the new indie bands to look out for in the near future. The band harmoniously blend together nicely to create something magical that comes out sounding like seasonal pros. In this spotlight with our Webzine, Madeline Speak gives us the 411 on the band's mission and what fans can look forward from the group. Here is what formulated from this online meeting.
Isaac: I just listened to one of your songs off your new EP/CD. What was the inspiration for making your new album?
Madeline Speak: This EP was really a collection of voices that I had in my head during a lot of restless nights, searching, hoping, and trying to find the answers that I needed to find.
Isaac: Who were your influences?
Madeline Speak: Hmm too many to count. Tool, Nirvana, Metallica, Enigma, Depeche Mode, the Beatles, all of my closest friends and family members, my girlfriend at the time...
Isaac: What do you consider to have been the highlight(s) and lowpoint(s) of your career to date?
Madeline Speak: I finally got everything going with my band members and such, so here I am, at the highlight of my career... and the lowpoint which is, the beginning ;)
Isaac: Brief history about your background plus the style of music you play.
Madeline Speak: I grew up in Orange County in the suburbs, was forced to go to church every Sunday since I was a little 5 year old kid, went to one of the top high schools in the country and graduated out of UC Irvine by some pretty crazy miracles (can explain another time). I think the style of music this EP represents was a real dark and low point in my life, a "desert" period so to speak. I'm sure it's not my last desert I'll have to go through, but the style of music represents that. A lot of people say "at one song you sound really hard and angry, and then you sound all uplifting and spiritual..." And I'd say it's because that's how I feel a lot of the times... show me a person who has only felt one emotion their whole life... and then I'll show you a popstar.
Isaac: How easy is it to gets gigs for you as an artist? What is the live music scene like in your area?
Madeline Speak: It's fairly simple once you've made a record; it's more about putting yourself out there and building a solid foundation. The music scene in L.A. is generally snobby; they only like ya if you're already famous. The music scene in Orange County and San Diego, Long Beach... these are people who don't necessarily always go with the crowd and genuinely love finding new music.
Isaac: What do you think of the state of Indie music at the moment? Do you listen to radio much at all? Has the Internet helped music grow or hindered it in your opinion?
Madeline Speak: I'm not too sure... I think indie music (meaning, independent music, not the genre) is gonna be what it's gonna be. I don't concern myself too much with trends and such... the Internet hasn't helped in a lot of ways because everyone wants something for free. If the NBA fans didn't have to pay to get in the arena... then how would that be for the NBA? It is what it is, but be assured "The times they are a changing".
Isaac: If you could create a fantasy band - what would be the line-up and why?
Madeline Speak: Ohh fun question, but an impossible one. Every band is their own, and each great musician has their own style... to try and put Bono and Jimi Hendrix in one band would, in my opinion, be a disaster.
Isaac: What CD's do you currently have available and where can they be purchased from?
Madeline Speak: Our EP is out digitally on iTunes and Amazon, and our physical EP you can get at one of our shows, and we're looking to play in California mainly, and hop around a few states in the summer.
Isaac: Where can fans access your music, videos, blogs, and anything else about you online?
Madeline Speak: We love all of you and thank you for all your continued support, my love goes out to you and my band and I hope to get to see you all very, very soon.
