Skillful and extremely talented Mett, The God Emcee has begun a quest to fulfill his lifetime dream of being a Hip-Hop performer. What makes Mett, The God Emcee stand out are his passion for Hip-Hop, his lyrical skills, and sweet rhymes. In this special spotlight with the brilliant lyrist, Mett, The God Emcee gives our Webzine the 411 on who he is and what he is hoping to achieve with his music. Enjoy!
Isaac: What was your single biggest accomplishment in 2008?
Mett: I'm gon' be a Father! I love hip hop, and in 2008 I had plenty of accomplishments that stick out in my head, but nothing compares to the way I felt the first time I heard my little ones heart beat….nothing. It's scary because I'll only be 21 in August and I wonder if I'll be ready, but there's only one way to find out. Look out for my protégé in about 15-16 years Giovanni Andrew, I promise my little man will be a monster!
Isaac: Describe the music scene in Winter Park, Orlando, Florida and Pittsburgh, PA; and which one do you prefer and why?
Mett: The hip-hop scene in Pittsburgh is the rawest; I really feel the only other place pushin like us is Boston. What you gotta love about the Burghs rap scene is that there's strength in unity, and we understand that. We are a city thriving with hip hop culture just waiting to be expressed to the rest of the nation. I think the artists in Pittsburgh really have a sense of pride in our city and you can hear it when you listen to our music. In The Burgh, race isn't as big of an issue as most places. White, Black it don't matter as long as the content of your albums are real and you can relate with someone going through the same adversity…then that's real hip hop. Florida's hip hop scene is completely different. Everyone's out for their own, there's no unity. But there is a very predominant rap movement in Orlando and Miami. Shot outs to Grey Matter, go check out some real hip hop from Florida!
Isaac: Elaborate a little about your upbringing and why you decided to choose your current path as a Hip-hop entertainer?
Mett: My upbringing (*chuckles*), I'm white…and broke. Family has always been big with us, without family you're without love. Without love, you're without reason. When I was young, I had a strong attraction to everything illegal. I didn't care what it was, if I thought I could make some money and catch an adrenaline rush I was down. Then I found hip-hop. At first, things got worse for me, in and outta cuffs for stupid juvenile reasons. I got sucked into the gangster image of rap and hadn't found my way quite yet. Eventually, I realized I hated being someone I wasn't and decided to go my own way with things. I dropped the talk about guns and didn't switch to conscience rap but just hip hop with meaning.
Isaac: Elaborate a Little about the concept behind Mett, The God Emcee.
Mett: Well Biblically, Mettatron has a few different stories. In a scripture of the Talmud, there's an angel named Elisha Ben Abuyah. This angel entered heaven and saw another angel (Mettatron) sitting down (an action that in heaven is permitted only to God Himself). Elisha proclaimed that "there must be two powers in heaven!" God smites Mettatron with 50 lashes of lighting to prove that he was a very powerful angel second in command to god, but not a second power of heaven. The rabbis explain that Mettatron was allowed to sit because of his function as the Heavenly Scribe, writing down the deeds of Israel. The Latin word Metator means messenger, guide and leader. After learning all that, I felt that the similarities in our professions were too coincidental for me to pass on the name and thus you have the alias The God Emcee.
Isaac: Elaborate a little about who was your biggest influences as far as artists in the music industry?
Mett: Damn, that's not an easy answer. I have so many different influences. Obviously, one of my biggest was Eminem. He will forever be known as the gate keeper for white emcees. If you're white in hip-hop, there will always be a comparison. I grew up on the greats, the time in hip-hop when culture sold and not club. Az, Biggie Smalls, Nas, Punisher, Big L, Jay, Common, Lox, DMX, Gangstarr, Rakim, Wu-Tang I mean the list goes on forever. The real influence I took from all of them was remaining true to yourself no matter what.
Isaac: How would you describe your lyrical style to others?
Mett: One word….Fresh. I constantly sit around and bullshit with my bois about who there style leans towards and every time it gets back to me we're undecided. I like that. I think placing a label on your flow for example saying "He sounds like Banks" confines you to a certain style. In life, as well as rap, I strive to be my own man. If I ever thought to myself that my shit sounded like somebody else….I'd be done.
Isaac: What is your definition for Hip-Hop Music?
Mett: Individuality, Originality, and Truth. Everyone wants to sound like the next man. Stop It! I like hearing someone who's willing to take a chance with a new sound or a different approach to their flow. Just be real to yourself and the fans, and they'll be real with you.
Isaac: You are currently working on your Bachelor's Degree in Recording Arts from Full Sail University (top Entertainment School in Orlando, Florida). What do you feel has been the biggest asset from attending this school that has helped you professionally?
Mett: Networking! Full Sail allowed me to network my ass off. Don't get me wrong, when I first went to Full Sail I was strictly an artist. I didn't know a patch bay from a project mixer. But now that I'm out…I could jump into any studio and run 99.9 percent of the gear in confidence. But the biggest thing I acquired from Full Sail was the connections. Networking is the key to life my friends.
Isaac: What has been the inspiration behind your music?
Mett: Honestly, most of the time I just do it to vent. They say letting all those thoughts stir around in your head can cause stress. Stress can cause tumors and so far I'm tumor free….I'd say my method has been effective. Naw I'm joking, although venting is a main reason. There's a lot of inspiration behind my music, my family, my friends, and obviously my life events…I just write as I roll with the punches.
Isaac: What can fans expect from your latest CD, you are working on currently? What is the inspiration behind the CD?
Mett: A Fresh Original Pittsburgh Sound. A quality CD with lyrical content and who knows… they might even learn a thing or two. I'm really pushing for a big sound on my next project I might even experiment a little with a fuse between drum n bass and hip hop for a track. Expect big name features, I don't want to drop names that haven't been locked in contractually yet but if spoken to Termanology's manager Dan Green about a feature, Immortal Techniques and J-Hood as well. One feature I'd love to get on there but can't get a hold of his manger Scooter yet, is Asher Roth. If you read this, holla at me man.
Isaac: What can fans expect from Mett, The God Emcee in the next five years?
