JC Interview Exclusive:
Randy Spelling
Randy Spelling
Do not be fooled by his last name, Randy Spelling is his own man with his own set of goals and ambitions in life. He comes from one of the most famous fathers (Aaron Spelling) in Hollywood but Randy definitely is carving his own niche and designing his own legacy that he wants to leave behind. In this candid interview with Randy, he reveals to our online readers his passions, his hopes, and his desires for human enlightenment. Please enjoy!
Isaac: It is a pleasure to have you featured in our online magazine, Randy. Let's talk about your upbringing. What would you say has been the most important life lessons your learned while growing up?
Randy: My upbringing was somewhat different than the rest of the world and I have received this question a lot. What was it like growing up? While everyone else would notice the differences in my family, the way my sister and I were raised, the fame, etc…I always focused on the similarities we had with everyone as to fit in!! The most important life lesson I learned growing up is that no matter what one may have materially, where they come from, what color they are, etc…emotions and feelings are the same. My dad was actually really great in pointing those things out…from the deck of the love boat!!
Isaac: I first encountered you when you were playing one of the lead characters on NBC's Sunset Beach (1997-1999). Elaborate a little about playing the role of Sean Richards and what made him similar and different to you?
Randy: Going back to Sunset Beach on NBC, this was my coming of age show. I have such fond memories of working at NBC. I played the character of Sean Richards. He was your typical teenager but from a family of extreme wealth and power. His family was always involved in drama (it was a Soap!) and he was the one always searching for the truth. I can relate on many different levels to this.
Isaac: What was one of the craziest story lines that you can remember about your character Sean Richards?
Randy: We did some pretty zany storylines on that show! Two that come to mind were Terror Island and this Deschanel curse was aging everyone and turning them to mummies. Sunset Beach was trying to follow trends that were a part of pop culture so when the movie Scream was really big, we did "Terror Island" and when the mummy came out…we did the curse weeks. Terror Island was like shooting a movie, the only difference being movies shoot 7 pages a day, we shot on hours show in one day!! I remember getting there at 6:00a.m. And not leaving till 3:00a.m. Then turning around and going back at 7:00a.m. the next morning. The cast was trying their best to not stumble their lines, but it was tough. Especially sleep deprived, we all got slap happy!
Isaac: Would you ever consider going back to a show like Sunset Beach?
Randy: I would always consider going back to a show like Sunset Beach. I never truly shut my door on anything. One difference that I would take with me is to have even more fun than I did. Life is too short to take things seriously. Acting is there as a creative art to play with.
Isaac: What do you think about the current state of our economy and how we can solve many of today's problems?
Randy: The question you asked is what do I think about the current state of economy and what we can do to solve the problems we are facing…I could go on for a while about this! I actually wrote a blog on my website regarding this.
Isaac: One of the main reasons why I asked you to complete an interview with our publication is because of what you are doing now. Expound a little about what you are doing these days as a life coach and why it is important to you?
Randy: What is going on is very challenging on every level. It is vital to really watch how we react and how we even talk about what is happening. When everyone is in fear of what is happening, what happens? More fear is created. We cannot control the things outside of us, but we can absolutely control the balance within. If the news stresses you out to watch it, if following the market on the internet on a daily basis becomes overwhelming…don't do it! I am not suggesting not to be aware, I am merely saying to nurture yourself in what is needed most. This time we are in challenges us to re-evaluate our systems, identify our failing and outdated ways of being and come into a time of empowerment and gentility. I have cut back on many different things, spending financially. However, I have upped my spending of quality experiences that are priceless. Did that sound like a cheesy AMEX commercial?!
Isaac: What type of responses have you received about this project?
Randy: These days I have a private practice in Life/Spiritual Coaching. I work with people co-creatively in various aspects of their life (i.e. relationships, career, stronger connection to one's self, etc…) to identify what is holding them back and where they ultimately want to be and then we bridge that gap. I love working with people and this is an ABSOLUTE PASSION of mine. I was always the one on set meditating, reading all kinds of spiritual books and learning about what is and what is perceived to be. This is important to me because I feel empowered by empowering others. When I see the results and I can be apart of another's journey and their "ah-ha" moments…there is nothing better to me. Well, maybe a really good chocolate chip cookie….it's close!
Isaac: Have your family been supportive?
Randy: I have received unbelievable responses from people. People go to my website and read some of the different blogs that I write and it is a way from me to be connected to whoever is reading. Words are very powerful and special to me. I also get to coach people across the country and even outside the country. My family is also very supportive of my coaching business.
Isaac: What is the one thing that you hate that people assume about you because you are the son of Aaron Spelling?
Randy: The one thing I hate that people assume about me because I am the son of Aaron Spelling…That I have tons of money, everything comes easy and that I wouldn't be down to earth. Funny too, this is what most people seem to say after meeting me, "you are nothing like I thought you would be." I can understand why people would think that but this just goes to show that we as a mass consciousness have a ways to go in judging people!
Isaac: How do you enjoy being an uncle? Do you get the opportunity to see your nephew and niece a lot?
Randy: It is very cool being an Uncle, although in all honesty, I do not see my nephew or niece that much.
Isaac: The Internet has helped entertainers like you in many ways. Name some of the benefits that you have received from having an official website on the Internet?
Randy: The biggest benefit of having a website is that it instantaneously connects me with people across the world. They can read about me or what I am doing and I get to hear from them. Wait, isn't there a site like this called Facebook!!
Isaac: What do you think will be your own legacy that you will leave behind when you are gone?
Randy: What will my own legacy be? Hmmm, that is a great question. Being as though we are creative beings and creating our reality moment to moment, this is hard to answer! My desire is to leave behind a world where people can appreciate each other and what each person has to offer individually and to everyone as a whole. We walk this earth together and I would like to leave footprints of grace and love. I used to worry about filling my dad's shoes and now I realize that my own shoes are great and unique. If I can pass on the message of accepting and loving the footprint you have….That is the legacy I want.
Isaac: What are some other projects you are currently working on?
Randy: Besides the coaching I am currently working on producing a couple things that are in the feel good genre of entertainment. Again, I like to marry entertainment with enlightenment…
Isaac: In ten years, I will...
Randy: In ten years I will…Be reading this saying "wow, look at where I was at then!"
Isaac: Final Thoughts…
Randy: Final thoughts…This was very fun for me, getting to write my answers to all these questions. I am grateful for the opportunity to express myself in this way and to connect with everyone reading this. Thanks for listening or reading me ramble on about myself…next time I would like to hear more about ALL OF YOU!
