If music is always evolving and changing, then music fans are going to fall in love with this next musical act. Ray Mailman and his band have moved music into a new direction with their eclectic sound that fuses several genres into one melodious tune. If you are a fan of artists who pour their heart and soul into their music, then read on to this special spotlight with Ray Mailman.

Isaac: What has been the best part of 2009 for you musically so far?

Ray: The Works Art & Design Festival here in Edmonton. It was a fun outdoor show in downtown Edmonton; we had great weather and it was really good exposure for us.

Isaac: What do you feel has been the biggest accomplishment for 2009 so far?

Ray: Ray getting married! No, seriously though, we've only been together as a band for just over a year, and we really feel like we're now gaining momentum with exposure and industry knowledge.

Isaac: Describe the music scene in area.

Ray: Edmonton is a town full of very talented musicians which makes the scene very eclectic, and there's never a shortage of live shows to check out. It can also be a challenge because opportunities are limited for those musicians.

Isaac: What has been the best venue to perform at and why?

Ray: There's this great little café near the university here that is incredibly supportive of indie music. The owners there are always very transparent with every act they work with, and it has been a great place to connect with other songwriters and industry professionals alike.

Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why?

Ray:

Jason Mraz - for his tongue-in-cheek song writing style.
John Mayer - for his sexy blues guitar riffs.
Lauryn Hill - for her soulful vocal style.
The Beatles - they're a cool band; you should check them out.
Michael Jackson - for his great pop grooves.
Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin - for their style and class.
Ian's faves - Jaco Pastorius and Francis Rocco Prestia (Tower of Power).
Darryl's faves - John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters).

This list may seem all over the map but... just listen to our music.

Isaac: Let's talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry?

Ray: A refreshing balance between relate ability and musicality.

Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?

Ray: Billy Joel. He is a phenomenal song writer and we're listening to him right now! That's a tough question though. Billy Joel is one of so many different artists that we would really enjoy working with, so it's difficult to pick just one.

Isaac: How would you describe your music to others?

Ray: Eclectic. We use jazz chords, funk grooves, soul vocals, clever lyrics and combine them into a high energy pop/rock show.

Isaac: What type of feedback have you received from fans about your music?

Ray: Generally surprised. They don't expect it to be as good as it is. Part of it might be because very few people can imagine what funk/jazz/soul sounds like. Lots of different people with wide varieties of musical preference seem to enjoy our music.

Isaac: Where can fans locate you at online?

Ray: raymailman.com is the easiest place to find us.

You can also find us on iTunes, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and also iLike and OurStage if that's your thing.

Isaac: What can fans expect from you in the next five years?

Ray: Five more years of awesome music! We have a good thing going and we're not stopping anytime soon. You can also count on lots of high fives, hugs and tuck jumps.

Isaac: Time for some shout outs to your family, friends, and fans…

Ray:

Ray loves Coral! xoxo (what a wuss)
Ian sends his love to his wife and son.
Darryl shouts out to his guildmates in Vanquish!
(nerd) We also want to shout out to our fans.
There are literally... dozens.

Isaac: Final words…

Never underestimate your awesomeness... oh, and buy our stuff!
