Richard Epcar is the perfect voice actor who knows what it takes to be the best in the business. He loves what he is doing and it shows when he is performing voice overs in the many games, movies, and TV Anime projects. With an impressive resume under his belt and a guarantee to continue to land major projects, Richard will continue to entertain his fans for years to come. In this recent interview with our Webzine, Richard and I go one on one in this ultra cool spotlight. Enjoy!
Noreé: Well let's get started by talking a bit about your upbringing.
Richard: I was born in Denver, Colorado; a great place to grow up. I went to school at the University of Arizona in Tucson-majoring in Performing Arts and I moved to Los Angeles, California almost thirty years ago.
Noreé: When did you make the decision to become a voice actor and why?
Richard: I Came to L.A. to become an on-camera actor-which I did and still do-(please check out my latest Coke commercial in my videos in MySpace page) I went on an audition with my wife-who was my girlfriend at the time and auditioned for the lead in a film to re-voice the lead actor. I got the part and started to work in voice acting ever since. The first big animated thing I did was 'Robotech'.
Noreé: What was it like when you heard your first work?
Richard: It was great. I had a lot of fun doing different voices. I still do.
Noreé: Out of all your roles which would you say is your most favorite?
Richard: That's a hard question because I love so many. I love Batou in Ghost in the Shell, Jigen in Lupin the Third, Bobobobobo, Ziggy in Xenosaga-one of your favorites, Armorhide in Transformers, Capt Grant in Shadow Chronicles, Ansem/Xenohort in Kingdom Hearts, I have to say one of my most favorites was the JOKER in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe-to name just a few.
Noreé: I really loved you as Ziggy in Xenosaga. You made him one of my favorite characters. What was it like playing this role and how did you prepare for it?
Richard: I really love Ziggy too because of the pathos of the role. He's a great character to play as an actor-because there are many levels to him. We don't have a lot of time to prepare in voice work. We basically cold read everything and do it when we're in the booth-we don't get to read the script beforehand.
Noreé: What would you says was your hardest role?
Richard: The one where I don't agree with the director. Most of the time I have fun doing this work. Once and a while a director can make the process un-fun.
Noreé: Do you have a dream role?
Richard: Bond, James Bond.
Noreé: What is the best aspect about your job?
Richard: That I can be who ever I can create with my voice.
Noreé: If you had the chance to pursue another career would you?
Richard: I would like to do what I do with voice work-acting, writing, and directing and do that on big films.
Noreé: Finally, do you have any final words for our readers?
Richard: I hope you enjoy what I do. I appreciate meeting you at conventions and hearing how much you enjoy the work.
