Smallfish Adventures | ||
Musician Evan LeFloch, while earning his music degree from Rollins College, began his creation of Smallfish Adventures in 1998. The idea came after speaking with a professor who asked Evan if "he wanted to be a small fish in a big pond or a big fish in a small pond". This thought provoking question made Evan think long and hard. His conclusion was that he would rather be a small fish in a big pond than a big fish in a small pond.
Today Smallfish is creating music that is capturing the hearts of many new fans. The two man band has also crafted beautiful lyrics with meaning and purpose. Add the talent of Eric Martin into the equation and Smallfish is a great band full of life and positive messages. Check out this recent interview that Smallfish completed with our Webzine. Enjoy!
Isaac: We'd love to know about your inspirations growing up. I hear so many influences in your music. How old were you when you first discovered music? Is there any kind of musical history in your family?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: My Dad played an accordion and my Mum sang a bit but neither was interested in becoming career musicians. I listen to whatever my parents listened to. Billy Joel, Paul Simon, U2, and they took me to musicals and orchestras so my classical interests developed there. I don't remember my first song... but I always had a knack for making music. I had a plush raccoon that had five notes, one on each paw and his tummy... and I learned to play a dozen songs with just those 5 notes.
Isaac: What drew you to pick up an instrument in the first place?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: I was maybe 6 or so when I went to a family friend's house and their son played the organ. When I heard him play the electric light parade from Disney, I wanted to play it too. He became my first organ teacher.
Isaac: As you hit your teenage years, did you know that this was what you would be doing for the rest of your life?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: I was pretty sure as a teenager that I would be playing music all my life but didn't really know how to make it happen or if I really wanted a career or just to play for fun. Halfway through high school I transferred to an art school and played music almost all day for 2 years. That is when I knew I wanted to chase music all my life.
Isaac: Is there a performer in any genre of pop culture that you would like to work with?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: Okay, here is my nerdy side... I would love to work with Yo Yo Ma and an orchestra.
Isaac: Who are some musicians that you really like, present or past?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, Barenaked Ladies, Paul Simon, and Jesse Cook.
Isaac: What is your ultimate goal with your music career?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: I want to keep writing and challenging myself to write fun, clever, catchy songs. I want to continue recording and performing, while developing my style. I would love to get my music into films.
Isaac: What have been some of the obstacles it has taken to get this far in your career?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: Money mainly... things cost so much and there are so many unexpected expenses. Travel has been one of the biggest expenses. I love to travel and when fuel or other costs rise, the budget can get out of control.
Isaac: Would you recommend this "field" to others who are aspiring to be musicians like you?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: Sure! It takes a little bit of sacrifice. I lived in a van for five years and played and practiced several hours every single day. I love what I do, it is totally worth it and it always has been. If someone is passionate about music enough to make a living out of it, they will find a way to make it happen. Go for it!
Isaac: Describe one piece of advice you've have been given to by others in the music industry.
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: Stick with it. I heard a saying a long time ago... "overnight success in fifteen years". Whenever a "new" artist breaks through and makes it big, I look to see how long they have been releasing albums and recording... the average is right around fifteen years almost every time.
Isaac: What genre of music do you consider most of your music?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: Genre is tough. Rock pretty much encompasses everything I do. Singer/Songwriter could be a sub classification of that. I like so many different styles but when I open my mouth to sing, it sounds like rock.
Isaac: What has been your favorite piece of work?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: "Needless to Say" is at the top of my list right now. It was just very fun to write. I like to write with parameters and limits to challenge myself, otherwise the songs don't have the energy they need. The goal was to write a song made up entirely of idioms... and after a morning of research and brainstorming, "Needless to say" was created.
Isaac: How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: The easiest way is either look up Smallfish on iTunes or check out our website www.smallfishadventures.com, there are links to everywhere.
Isaac: Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: Sure! Eric, my touring partner. Gary and Rhonda, the recording/managing/tech support and everything else team. Becky, the office staff team and Palooza, who knows all of our music better than we do and sends it to people who can use it.
Isaac: Any last words?
Evan LeFloch of Smallfish Adventures: Thanks for interviewing me and helping me get my music out there.
