New Music Spotlight
August 2009 Edition

The Aviation Orange

The Aviation Orange

Sonicbids

The Aviation Orange has created a fun and exciting sound that music fans will easily fall in love with when music fans hear the band for the first time. A mixture of Pop, Rock, and Alternative The Aviation Orange tells colorful stories through their music. One of the biggest appeals to the band is how wonderful each member of the group works well with the other.

In this recent interview with our Webzine, lead singer and guitarist, Michael Nesci, spoke to us about the band, their new LP, and their major musical influences.

Enjoy this spotlight!

Isaac: What has been the best part of 2009 for you musically so far?

The Aviation Orange: That would definitely be releasing our LP. It's been a while in the making. Recording, producing, mixing, mastering was all done by the band. It's tough having to wear so many hats; you don't get to just stay in that creative artist mode. You have to look at recording from all angles when you are doing the producing and engineering at the same time; it seemed like it really extended the whole endeavor. But ultimately having total control is much more rewarding.

Isaac: What do you feel has been the biggest accomplishment for 2009 so far?

The Aviation Orange: We are really excited to have become an affiliated artist with Rethinkpop Music. Rethink is doing some really cool things in the music industry; they basically give artist access to the tools to make music for a living while remaining free to peruse their artistic vision. This fall we will be heading out with rethink and a few other artists (The Vanguard, The Ambassadors) for a mini-Midwest tour, culminating at the Midpoint Music festival.

Isaac: Describe the music scene in your area:

The Aviation Orange: The Brooklyn scene has to be one of the most eclectic scenes anywhere. Bands range from freak folk, to noise to synth pop and everywhere in between. That may make for a more fractured audience and shows, but you also don't end up with a bunch of bands having the same exact sound. There is a lot of creative energy flying around.

Isaac: What has been the best venue to perform at and why?

The Aviation Orange: We have had the chance to play the Mercury Lounge (NYC) a few times, which has been great. Every big NYC band has passed through the Mercury Lounge. It is definitely the place to get noticed. But playing a DIY show has its own advantages as well; those crowds always have the most energy… and booze.

Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were your biggest influences in the music industry and why?

The Aviation Orange: There was a great period in the late 70's and early 80's where punk evolved and fractured into a hundred different genres, bands still had youth and energy, but also more intricate songwriting and instrumentation. You can hear at lot of that post-punk influence in the way we write. We are big fans of creating music that's melodic but still has an edge.

Isaac: Let's talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry? The Aviation Orange: We hope that we are bringing a unique sound. A lot of work goes into our song writing, we try to always have a few melodic ideas playing off each other at the same time. Ultimately, we want a sound that nods to our influences but is fresh at the same time.

Isaac: If you had an opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?

The Aviation Orange: The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, so I can marry Karen O.

Isaac: How would you describe your music to others?

The Aviation Orange: This is always the hardest question…but let's say post-punk with synth pop tendencies. A lot of our influence comes from the big indie bands of the 80's: New Order, the Smiths, and the Pixies. Think the synth work of early New Order with the male/female vocal trade off of the Pixies.

Isaac: What type of feedback have you received from fans about your music?

The Aviation Orange: We have been getting a lot of good feedback lately. I think fans are finding the songs accessible but interesting at the same time, which is great. Where just so glad there are people out there who can enjoy what we are doing.

Isaac: Where can fans locate you at online?

The Aviation Orange: www.myspace.com/theaviationorange

Isaac: What can fans expect from you in the next five years?

The Aviation Orange: More records and more shows. We hope to branch out and hit more cities and towns. And we will always be trying to stretch and experiment with our sound. We don't want to be the kind of band that keeps releasing the same record with a different title year, after year.

Isaac: Time for some shout outs to your family, friends, and fans…

The Aviation Orange: Just want to tell everyone to check out Rethinkpopmusic.com, they are really trying to turn the whole music business on it head.

Isaac: Final words…

The Aviation Orange: Thanks to everyone that has ever taken an interest in us, it's hard to get out of the gate these days and we are just happy to be making music.
