Every Voice Counts

The recent election in Iran and the Iranian opposition to that outcome, whether rigged in Ahmadinejad's favor or not, brought to mind the 2000 election here in the United States when George W Bush seemingly stole the presidency from Al Gore. During that 2000 election, George W Bush's campaign officials were accused of underhanded tactics by using state officials to stall or prevent re-counts of votes that were in question. That scenario made me wonder if any of our current crises such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or the financial meltdown could have been avoided if we would've taken to the streets and peacefully voiced our collective unrest in the same way that the Iranians are mostly doing.

Could we have done more to keep Bush out of the White House? Certainly there were many complaints and countless hours of questioning by the media, well except for Fox news of course. But could not we, the common, folks have manned-up and gave George and crew the proverbial finger? Instead, we sat idly by and let it happen, possibly because we felt that nothing could be done or maybe people were scared of the government's retribution. Either way, we now see something from the people of Iran that should inspire us and give us strength the next time our government tries to ram something down our throats that we are having trouble swallowing. We can do something about it!

After all, our country has a long history of people standing against injustice; remember we Americans gave a fist to the Chin of England and its taxes at the Boston Tea Party. Martin Luther King inspired African-Americans to fight for civil rights. Women fought for the right to vote and now there's a movement to legalize same-sex marriage which is slowing picking up steam.

What does this mean? Basically, nothing can be accomplished without someone standing up to the powers-that-be and demanding fairness whether it is in human equality issues or even in stolen elections!

Our voices can be heard even if we have to yell!

A New Alley

In planning this edition of Views from the Left, I envisioned an insightful piece concerning the self-maiming of the Republican Party by the "conservative" mouthpieces that we hear screaming from televisions and radios across the country. You know who I'm talking about: Rush Limbaugh, Anne Coulter, Sean Hannity and Fox News. I had planned to discuss how hypocritical the Right-Wing finger pointing is; concerning President Obama's stimulus package and How Republicans are ranting that Democrats just want "BIG" government, while apparently forgetting that (R) George Bush had a giant stimulus package of his own and grew the government more than any previous president in history.

Maybe they are just cherry- picking information to suit their purposes? Taxes and "tea parties" were also on my topic menu. It's a shame that I won't be explaining that a country is much like a household and that it wont operate properly without a source of income; so rolling back some of the Bush tax cuts -for the wealthiest Americans- might not be such a bad idea? As for these government-waste protests, called Tea Parties, get out there and voice your collective opinions, it's the American way.

However, it must be duly noted that this "wastefulness" didn't just begin when President Obama took office. In fact, this terrible spending has been going on for the last eight years under a Republican President; so why weren't tea parties popular then? It all boils down to the Republican Party being on the ropes, their numbers are dwindling and they are throwing everything they've got against the wall to see what might stick. The GOP is desperate and it shows.

But as stated earlier; I'm not concerned with any of those issues, this month's Views is about Arlen Specter and his decision to leave the Republican Party. It is not much of a surprise that he did, he is a Senator in Pennsylvania which is a Blue state and his political prospects were looking dire. Though he is popular among state voters as a whole, he is looked on as somewhat of a weak link among conservatives and may not have won the Republican Primary.

So Specter did what had to be done to further his political life. But along with that self-preservation, there comes a benefit to the Democratic Party. By adding specter to the fold, Dems become 60 Senators strong, meaning, that Obama has a potentially philibuster proof majority to support him and his agenda for the country. (actually, we are still waiting to have Al Franken seated in Minnesota before there's a full 60 but that's coming soon.)

So, Arlen Specter, I welcome you to the Left, may you have many more years ahead of you as a Democratic Senator.

A Turn in the Right Direction

By: Todd Withrow, Senior Entertainment & Political Columnist

President Obama has been in office roughly a month and already has made some very important moves. He has ordered an end to the war in Iraq, enacted equal pay for women, put a salary cap on executives from companies needing a government bailout and most recently he has managed to get a giant stimulus bill passed. It seems Obama has learned a valuable lesson from watching George Bush sit on the sidelines while our country fell apart and obviously he does not want to repeat Bush's mistakes.

That being said, I have some advice for our new president: forget bi-partisanship and forget the GOP. Reaching across the aisle is an admirable gesture but it isn't going to work. Republicans are not worried about getting our country out of this slump. They are only worried about getting back into power; case in point, Obama's stimulus package.

Everyone agrees that something has to be done to get our economy jump started and this package is at least a step in the right direction. Sure it has a hefty price tag and there are some items involved that could be jettisoned but in theory it is a good place to start. However, The GOP would have us believe that they want nothing to do with this stimulus, that it's just too big and that they would not saddle the American tax-payer with such a formidable amount of money to pay back.

Of course, they did not mind wrangling Americans with the cost of Bush's war on Iraq or the Bush 700 billion dollar stimulus from just last year. In fact, Republicans were quite on board for those money-pits; with bail-out money flowing freely into banks, with little oversight and subsequently being grossly misused and just where were those Republican Senators and Representatives when Haliburton was blatantly overcharging we taxpayers to rebuild Iraq.

Why weren't the Republican Party making a stand then? Possibly, because their guy was in office? So Mr. President, forget working with the republicans, Americans voted their tired old party out of the Senate, out of the House of Representatives and out of the Presidency.

Don't worry yourself with what they say or do, just keep making positive changes and things will work out, God willing. We know it will take time to climb out of this hole but we are a strong and patient Nation and we have HOPE!

An Auspicious Beginning: The American Dream Comes True

I want to extend to the readers of this Webzine a Happy New Year. While we were pleased with the magazine's performance last year, this years focus will see the magazine continue forging its niche in the online entertainment publication world in hopes of spinning this Webzine into a new direction. Initially, I wanted to outline all that has happened to Junior's Cave; however after speaking with Todd, Entertainment and Political Columnist, I now believe that it is important to cover the upcoming historical event that will take place on January 20, 2009 - the 44th presidential inauguration of President Elect Barack Obama.

This world has witnessed a "Change" in this country's attitude that equals the events of the 1960's thus it would have been negligent for me to not speak about the steps leading up to now. When Senator Barack Obama first embarked on his bid to become our 44th President of the United States, there were many who felt that he would never see his dreams come to fruition.

President-Elect Obama's vision of a "Change" touched so many lives not just in our home country but throughout the world that I feel America has finally grown up. I am not going to address the feud between Senator Clinton and Senator Obama during the National Democratic Convention; I will save that for the many Political Analysts to debate; however, I will state that Barack's tenacious attitude of never giving up forced me to place in perspective my own personal struggles as an African-American male living in the United States.

What Barack's road to the White House has taught me is that it does not matter who one is or where he comes from; instead one can choose to take afforded opportunities and shine. More importantly, Barack's mission of "Change" helped me to realize that one can not simply lie down in life and take what it tosses. One needs to be able to develop a strong backbone to tackle any adversities in order to be effective.

Barack will make history on Tuesday when he is sworn in as our 44th President of the United States. The history that is unfolding for those of you living under a rock is the inauguration of the Nation's 1st African-American President; something that I thought my Grandparents born in 1919 and 1925 respectively would ever live to see. It is amazing to think that our older generation will witness this historic event. Just think about where we were as a Nation during the 1920's - 1970's and where we are at now; it gives me goose bumps to say the least.

So as I leave you with this final thought about how African-Americans and Americans for that matter will change; the dream that America - a melting pot that blends all of us as one - may soon be realized as we take this auspicious beginning together in a country that is finally growing up.

Where is the Democratic Party Heading?

By Todd Withrow, Senior Entertainment & Political Columnist
Published: December 19, 2008 10:59 PM EST

Does it seem to you, the American public, that Democrats are intent on self-destruction as a party? It certainly does to me. I'm beginning to wonder if I should re- register as an Independent. I had hoped that Democrats would have learned something from witnessing the train wreck that the GOP has been for the last 8 years. Apparently, they have not witnessed.

Illinois Governor Blagojevich (D) and his attempt to sell off Obama's soon vacant Senate seat is what's boiling my temperature. The Governor thought that he would be able to bargain his way up the political ladder. Well, he has committed political suicide and faces some serious charges, which may end in impeachment or worse. It will only be a matter of time till we find out who might have been interested in buying the open seat meanwhile, soon-to-be Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will also be leaving behind a coveted Senate seat. The Governor of New York will have to appoint a fill-in until the next election. So far, the biggest name to be mentioned for that spot is the much-beloved Caroline Kennedy. Word is that she is very interested in it and with all of her political pull; she very well may get it.

Republicans have been quick to point out that she has no experience and that does not surprise me. However, it's been reported that some of Hillary's people are not too happy with the possibility that Kennedy may replace her in the Senate. I suppose it's sour grapes because Caroline backed Obama in the presidential race? If so, then Hillary's supporters need to grow up. If Hillary herself can put aside her loss and become Obama's Secretary of State, then certainly those who backed her should also be able to do the same. The bottom line is give Caroline a chance; lets' see what she can do before she is torn to shreds by the very party that has been so supportive of her through the years.

Democrats need to stop this pettiness before we fall apart. Unfortunately, with these current scandals and in-fighting we are giving the Republicans ammunition that can be used against us. Do we really want to be the cause of our own political demise? Do we really want to distract from President Obama's message of hope and change? What we need to focus on are the issues that really matter at the moment; like our economy.

What Kind of World Do We Live In?

By Todd Withrow, Senior Entertainment & Political Columnist
Published: November 23, 2008 9:42 PM EST

Well, for the past 8 years, we have lived in a Bush world where the rich became richer and the poor became poorer. A place where rich folk and big companies received handsomely tax breaks so that they could supposedly turn that extra money into more jobs for the common man. Has that concept worked? I don't think so, unemployment was at an all-time high at 6 .5 % in October. People are worried and rightly so. But what about those companies that have been getting the big tax break? How are they fairing?

Well, some have run into financial trouble but will be get bailed out. The question Americans should be asking is why are these large corporations in trouble if they were given so much of a break to begin with by the Bush Administration? Did these companies spend foolishly? Did they mismanage? What are those rich people doing wrong?

It's hard to tell from way down here on the low end of the income scale. Either way, the American people deserve a fair chance again. We do not need to saddle future generations with giant debt either. We can not keep borrowing from China if we want our country to still belong to us. There has to be a solution that makes sense.

Let's pray that Obama will pick the right advisors to guide him through this disaster that Bush is leaving behind. By the way, we need to give president-elect Obama as much support as we can so that he will be able to get some beneficial laws passed. In order to do that, we need as many Democrats in the Senate as possible.

I mention this because there will be a run-off election in Georgia between Saxby Chambliss (R) and Jim Martin (D) on December 2 so if you're a Georgian make sure to go and cast your vote for Martin. It's vital.

The Influences of the All-Powerful Media

By Todd Withrow, Senior Entertainment & Political Columnist
Published: November 15, 2008 12:15 PM EST

Over the last 2 years, we have had the fantastic opportunity to witness history in the making. Barack Obama will become our nation's first African-American president, while Hillary Rodham Clinton was the first viable female presidential candidate and Sarah Palin, while seemingly inept, still managed to become the first female vice-presidential candidate that the Republican Party has ever nominated. Along the way, we also witnessed the incredible influence that the media wields over politics. It's no secret that Fox News has long been the champion of the Republican Party but this election cycle saw MSNBC swing its growing strength to the side of Barack Obama much to the chagrin of his chief rival, Senator Clinton.

Many expected that she would be the nominee of the Democratic Party this time around but as MSNBC and many other media outlets fell in love with Obama, things didn't go her way. In fact, many times throughout the campaign it looked as if the freshman Senator from Illinois was getting an easy ride and when Clinton supporters brought this to the attention of Americans, they were called whiners. Over at fox, McCain was not getting the backing that the Republican candidate would normally get until he picked the pro-life conservative Governor of Alaska as his running mate, and then suddenly McCain was their hero.

So it has become very apparent to Americans that there is no longer a bias-free media. So we must take their "news" with a grain of salt and learn to research the politicians and issues for ourselves, to get a more truly balanced understanding of what we are being told. That being said, Obama now faces a giant hurdle that could cripple him right from the start. That hurdle is the media. For all their well intentioned support, they have built him up to almost unreachable heights. Will one person be able to stave off this failing economy, end the war in Iraq, find Osama Bin Laden, end our dependency on foreign oil, bring our country together and reset America's standing in the world? I have no doubt that President-Elect Obama will give everything he has got to accomplish these things but will the media give him the time he will need to do it? Will they be kind to him or will they begin tearing his decisions apart? Only time will tell.

A Symbol of Hope!

November 5th, 2008 is the day after a truly historic election. Today, we, as Americans, have our 44th president. He is a Democrat and his name is Barack Obama. Oh, another thing is that he happens to be African-American. Finally, Americans have seen past the racial divides that have separated us for far too long. Of course, Obama is so much more than just the first African- American president; he is an inspirational man with a truly amazing life story.

He comes from a broken home, raised by a single white mother and later by her parents, after her death from cancer. Obama has been through tough times and has been made stronger for it. He will need that strength.

America's financial infrastructure is in shambles. People are struggling to keep their jobs and many are losing their homes. We need President Obama to reassure us that everything will be fine. That our hopes and dreams have not been in vain, but that we can still make something of ourselves just as he has done.

Barack Obama is more than the first African- American president of the USA, he is a symbol to us all, a symbol of hope!

The End of a Reign

By Todd Withrow, Senior Entertainment & Political Columnist
Published: October 31, 2008 11:59 PM EST

October is a special month. It brings to mind happy thoughts of fall festivals, county fairs, candy and very eager kids dressed in whacky costumes; but this year; October is even more special, as we are almost to the end of the Bush reign of terror! Just a few short days after we celebrate Halloween, we will also be electing a new president. The people of America will have a golden opportunity to say "out with the old and in with the new".

For everyone's sake, let's hope that Barack Obama is the guy that gets the job. Seriously, we don't need another 4 years of a republican president, especially one that agreed with George Bush 90% of the time. We need a fresh start. That being said, it's going to be a rough time for whoever wins. We are in a bad situation with the economy, a very bad situation. No one person will be able to fix this fiasco. It's going to take time and resolve but I believe Obama and the Democrats have what it takes to sort this out and to rejuvenate our country financially and to rebuild our sense of security.

These last 8 years of Bush have been terrible, so many disasters have happened that we almost need a scorecard to keep track. Of course, Bush wasn't to blame for the 9/11 terrorist attacks or Hurricane Katrina, but his response to those crisis was far from presidential. He basically used 9/11 as an excuse to declare war on Iraq when we should have concentrated on capturing Osama Bin Laden. He also used 9/11 as leverage to wire-tap Americans even if they weren't suspected of any wrong-doing.

When Katrina hit New Orleans, Bush waited days and days before sending in any type of aid or relief and he has yet to keep his promise of rebuilding that area. The list could go on but I just wanted to make a point that Bush and his republicans have been awful at running this country.

It's time for a sweeping change. We need to elect Obama and as many Democrats as possible, to the senate and the house, if we want to see significant progress in the next 4 years!

Enjoy October and remember that Election Day is just around the corner.

GET OUT AND VOTE DEMOCRATS!

Change of the Guard is Coming

By Todd Withrow, Senior Entertainment & Political Columnist
Published: September 26, 2008 7:21 PM EST

Today, I voted for Obama. That's right I couldn't wait until November to cast my vote and since I'm a Georgia boy, I have the option of voting early. God bless Georgia. Well, it was an odd feeling for me, voting for the guy that beat my girl, Hillary -I'd been hoping to vote for her since Kerry lost in 2004. So it was odd and yet it was very gratifying knowing that I was voting for the guy that will defeat John McCain and that evil shrew, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska.

You may notice that I'm not at all fond of the republican ticket especially Palin, she's a wolf in sheep's clothing. She talks like a down-to-earth kinda gal but she's plainly just another GOP clone that says whatever she needs to say to get her share of the power. People joked that Obama wouldn't be able to trust Clinton if she was on his ticket but it's McCain that needs to watch his back! That woman has twisted, bent, and distorted the truth in such a way that even Dick Cheney must admire her skills.

She was for the Alaskan Bridge-to-Nowhere before she was against it. In fact, as governor she even went ahead and built the road that was leading to the bridge. She says she wants to reform the government but yet she has been accused of using the governor's office to take revenge on her ex-brother-in-law and she refuses to cooperate with the investigation unless it's done by a committee that she approved.

She's said she wants to stop spending taxpayer's money on unnecessary indulgent -like the governor's private jet that she sold at a loss - yet she had a tanning booth installed in the governor's mansion. Maybe she feels the taxpayer's don't mind paying for that, after all, a governor must have a good tan to get her job done properly. Well, the list could go on but I think you get the point about Palin.

McCain is a piece of work himself. He is running around half-cocked, making crazy statements and making even crazier decisions, hoping that Americans will forget that he is just another BUSH waiting to run the country into the ground further. McCain and Palin offer no real CHANGE for our country. They offer no real HOPE. Unless of course you're in the elite group of millionaires that the republicans bend over backwards to placate.

So today I voted for Obama and Biden but even more so I voted for the United States of America. It was my vote to get this great country back on track and to bring some relief to those of us who need it. Let's face it, most of us common folk have issues facing us that we could use some help with and I believe that President Obama will put his best foot forward into delivering that relief.

I pray to God that this election will bring an end to the downward spiral that our economy is suffering and that we will have leaders we can trust once again.

A New Hope

By Todd Withrow, Senior Entertainment & Political Columnist
Published: August 29, 2008 11:26 AM EST

It's been about 2 months or so since Senator Hillary Clinton suspended her historic presidential campaign and slowly - very slowly - my disappointment has turned into grudging acceptance. Senator Barrack Obama is the Democratic Party's Nominee and he won that honor fairly. I honestly can not say that I'm as enthused as everyone else seems to be but maybe in time I will be, I'm open to change my mind - after all change is important to growth.

In fact, I just told one of my online-friends that same thing, so I'd better be able to apply it to my own life. I guess I just had my heart set on Hillary, but it's time to view this election from an objective stance to see things as they are and not let my emotions get in the way. This country needs a democrat in the White House; I can not stress that enough. We need someone to put Americans first; not the super-rich or the mega-companies but the common folk; the people who we see everyday on the street.

Americans are hurting in every way: financially, emotionally and physically. We need a leader to guide us back to the right path and maybe Barrack Obama is that leader. I really hope that he is! True, he is short on national experience but he is long on optimism and surely he has the ability to inspire people- as he has proven in his own historic campaign.

Inspiration is something that has been missing from politics for quite awhile. Let it be said that I do believe Hillary would have made an awesome president. She is a leader, a role model, and a champion for the common people! Now Senator Clinton has backed Senator Obama and she asks that her supporters do the same. I will honor her request, for the sake of our great country and the people who need to believe again in America's promise of a better life.

Choices?

By Todd Withrow, Senior Entertainment & Political Columnist
Published: June 27, 2008 1:26 PM EST

Have you ever been so disappointed with something that you just wanted to forget it? I am guessing that everyone has experienced that state of being at some point or another. Well, gang, I am experiencing that feeling now. The democratic nominee looks like it will be Senator Barack Obama and not my choice, Hillary. I am not happy with this outcome. I've been going over every twist and turn in my mind that has happened during the Democratic Primary and trying to pinpoint where Hillary’s campaign got off track. I think most of the blame can be pointed at the feet of her husband, Bill, when he made very racially-tinged remarks in South Carolina.

That seems to be the point where things started going really bad. Maybe the mismanagement of her campaign by Patty Solis Doyle had something to do with it also. Maybe it could have been Mark Penns’ ineptitude as Clinton’s chief strategist that even played a part in this outcome. Either way, what’s done is done and Obama is now the nominee for my cherished party. So what do I do in the fall? Do I tuck my tail and vote for a guy that I don’t believe will make a great president? Someone who sat in a church for 20 years listening to anti-American sermons from a self indulgent preacher who seems to thrive on being divisive and negative to white Americans? Maybe Obama has distanced himself from that church and those remarks; but for me, it is too little too late.

So if I do not want to vote for Obama, do I vote for McCain, a guy that wants to keep us in Iraq for what seems like forever? The senator from Arizona thinks war is good apparently and maybe it is for oil companies or Halliburton but I certainly do not agree and the American people do not agree either.

Honestly, I really do not trust McCain as far as I could throw him. He is just another Bush and that is not good. So, I guess this fall when I go to vote I will be writing in Hillary's name; not to protest but just because I believe she would have been the right choice! Unless of course, Obama chooses her as his running-mate that might make me vote for him.

The State of Things

By Todd Withrow, Senior Entertainment & Political Columnist

This Democratic Primary season has been a wild ride for everyone involved from candidates to political junkies like myself, and I can't believe it's almost over. The candidates have dropped off steadily and now there are only two left: Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Now it's no secret that I've been rooting for Hillary. I think she has what it takes to put this country back on the right path. She's been delivering speech after speech on healthcare, the economy and the war in Iraq; and I like what I hear.

Unfortunately for her, it seems that knowledge and experience aren’t what Americans are looking for in this election. It appears that instead they want change as supplied by Obama. Now being the cynic that I am I’d like to know what kind of "CHANGE" Mr. Obama is offering us. What direction does he want to take this country in? What are his plans? Does he have any plans? Well he has said he wants to take us away from the "old style" of politics but oddly enough he engages in those styles just as vigorously as the Clinton campaign. I’m sure he would deny this but it’s been widely noted in political circles that the Obama people have been making plenty of calls to African-American Congressmen & women who support Hillary and accusing them of being traitors to their race.

Now after hearing this type of political nastiness you would expect a New Style politician to come out against those underhanded tactics but as of yet we haven’t heard a peep from Mr. Obama; and I bet we won’t. Obama also says he has better judgment to run this great country of ours but if you take the time to look at his voting record in the Illinois legislature you’ll discover that on many votes Obama just voted present instead of using his superior judgment to make the right decisions.

He also got the top spot on the Afghanistan Oversight Committee but has neglected that position because he has decided to run for president. And excuse me but I think the state of Afghanistan is very important as we are in a war there. If he isn’t concerned enough to attend those committee meetings, how can we trust him to run our country? Those points being made, it is true that Obama has run a very well maintained campaign. He has stuck to his theme of CHANGE and he hasn’t faulted from it. Hillary on the other hand has switched from a theme of experience then to change etc etc.

Her campaign has seemed much like a rollercoaster ride. Personally I think that the big mis-step in her bid for the White House came when Bill Clinton stepped too far into the race in South Carolina and in doing so he stepped on a lot of toes. He seemed more like he was running for the Presidency instead of supporting his wife. Mr. Clinton definitely pushed some of Hillary’s African-American voters away with his Jesse Jackson comment.

In hindsight, it looks like he may have cost her the democratic nomination. I hope not though I’d love to see Hillary pull out victories in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island and thereby changing the dynamic of this race. Honestly, it looks really tough for the senator from New York but if it’s one thing that everyone in politics knows; it’s that you never count a Clinton out! They are fighters!

Rupert Murdoch (the Devil) and His MySpace

Published: October 11, 2007 8:47 AM EST
by Todd Withrow

First of all, I have a MySpace account which I’m not sure if I should even keep at this point. Second of all, when it was reported that Rupert Murdoch -the guy who owns Fox News- was purchasing Myspace; I had a sick spiraling feeling inside my gut. Well months have passed and now we can see the outcome of his business dealings. I’m sure any of you MySpacers out there have noticed the advertisements lately. You know the ones concerning the Democrats destroying businesses (etc.)? Of course, I do know also that there are some Democrats who even have profiles on MySpace including candidates for the 2008 Presidential Race, but it seems that the ads that are run there support the Republican propaganda. It just seems that MySpace will just become MurdochSpace and continue his policy of being unfair & unbalanced.
