New Music Spotlight:
Chromaticism

Rock / Progressive / Alternative

I recently contacted Ryan from Chromaticism about setting up an interview with the band. A group who hails from Yonkers, NY and formed in January of 2004 by Ryan Scully, Spencer Sinkov and Andy Stark, is something to look out for in the coming years. In fact, one of the best aspects about the band is the band’s take of the modern rock scene. Chromaticism is packed with raw aggression and plenty of deep emotions. In more recent news, the band added to their “family” their long time friend and musical colleague, Joe Scalone, who has added his own talents to the band.

Some of the band’s influences included Classical/Jazz/Progressive/Rock and Funk. This is evident when one listens to their music. One of the most pivotal moments in the life of Chromaticism was in the Spring of 2006, Chromaticism had suffered the loss of their friend and founding member Spencer. This horrific tragedy brought certain uncertainties to the group. But from the ashes of Spencer’s untimely death, came some relief in the form of Anthony "Brock" Brockington. Anthony spawned a new beginning with the group with his deeply inspired musical voice. Now, Chromaticism was able to continue with their original vision and look to carry the name that they started with Spencer. It is my pleasure to present this spotlight:

Isaac-Joseph: I am very happy that you decided to do this interview with our magazine. You have been busy in 2007. What are some of the highlights of this year so far?

Chromaticism: Thanks Isaac-Joseph, we are also pleased to have the opportunity to complete this interview for Junior’s Cave. 2007 has been a very busy year for us, but we feel that we have made positive strides towards the future. The biggest highlight of this year was definitely the completion of our first album, “Deconstructing Kharma”. We were very privileged to work with a very talented young producer/engineer named Tom Rosato. He is an extraordinary musician with an impeccable ear. Tom is also one of our closest friends and supporters at this time.

Isaac-Joseph: I know from your bio that the band was started with Ryan Scully, Spencer Sinkov and Andy Stark. Describe the process of how you guys decided that this was something that you wanted to do:

Chromaticism: Oddly enough, we had met through the Internet! I (Ryan) had originally tried out for a lead singer position on a project that Andy and Spencer were involved in, but ultimately did not end up working out. We decided to meet and jam one weekend to see what could evolve….The results were “Refrain From Sinking” and “Fate’s Decay”. We knew from that moment that it wasn’t necessarily something we wanted to do, but something we HAD to do.

Isaac-Joseph: In recent time, the band was struck with tragedy when long time friend and founding member, Spencer Sinkov, passed. How were you able to overcome such enormous grief and what have you taken from that tragedy to add to your music?

Chromaticism: Spencer was the type of person that you would only hope to have an opportunity to meet in your lifetime. He was an amazing talent that had a presence that was completely unmistakable. Although it would be difficult to say that we ever could truly overcome his loss, we know that by continuing to do what we do will help to keep his spirit alive in our music.

Isaac-Joseph: Fans are a very integral formula for one’s success. What role does Chromaticism’s fans play to you guys making music?

Chromaticism: Our fans are definitely the most integral piece to the life of this band. The communication that they provide to us on a day-to-day basis allows us to keep consistency in the flow of our music. Thanks to the Internet these days, we can reach out to a larger demographic that was not nearly possible a few years ago.

Isaac-Joseph: When you are on stage performing, describe the feeling you get?

Chromaticism: When on stage, the feelings that the audience provides definitely makes you realize that all the time and effort is worth it…We spend a lot of time listening back to our recordings to constantly keep our emotional mindset in check for each song. We work very hard to ensure that our fans can experience that same feelings live that they would get when listening to our recordings independently.

Isaac-Joseph: What has Anthony "Brock" Brockington added to the group to make it what it is now?

Chromaticism: Brock has a fantastic vibe and groove to his music. You can hear it in his playing throughout the album. To fully experience Brock, you need to see him when we play live. He has a stage presence that is totally electric. No matter what venue we are playing, we never fail to receive consistent praise from Brock’s performance.

Isaac-Joseph: Many of your music seem to speak from your soul. Is this something that comes naturally or is this plan? Do you feel that because of where you guys are coming from that it helps build upon how you are making music? Why or Why not?

Chromaticism: Each and every song is a direct conduit from the soul. I (Ryan) am normally a very introverted person in “real life”, but the music allows me to let it ALL out. I’ve felt for a long time that the mind is your own worst enemy. Most people can relate to spending sleepless nights thinking about “someone” or “something”. A song like “In A Scent” is a good example of me saying %@$# it and move on. We’re very close friends outside of the band. The progression of songs through “Deconstructing Kharma” document various events that we have experienced together over the past couple years. As the saying implies, “You live and you learn”. This is very prevalent in what we have to say in our music.

Isaac-Joseph: Last thoughts; what do we have to look forward to in the next few years:

Chromaticism: We plan to do extensive playing and promotion for “Deconstructing Kharma” through this year and beyond…We have also begun to write a lot of new material leaving right from where we left off on the last recording. We’re hoping to continue to expand our network so that more and more people can be exposed to what we are trying to accomplish – Which is to convey music that heals and inspires...

Special Thanks to Ryan Scully for setting this up for the band.
