JC Sports Exclusive:
Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts
Steven McDonald

Team Golden Isles MMA

Mixed Martial Arts has become one of the best sports entertainments to roll around in a long time. As a matter of fact, if one wants to look to discover some serious Mixed Martial Arts action on TV, he or she needs not to search hard. With popular organizations such as Bodog Fights, Ultimate Fighting Champion, TapouT, and International Fight League to name a few being sported on various TV/Cable programs, Mixed Martial Arts has find its way into the heart of Americans all around.

Today fans of this type of sports entertainment can add another establishment to their list: The Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts. I recently had the delight to speak thru phone interview with Steven McDonald of the Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts about this organization and what we can anticipate from his team. I was eagerly impressed with Steven during the interview and exhilarated about the many great things that the Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts will bring around this area, the Golden Isles of Georgia. Having an organization such as the Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts Association here in Brunswick, Georgia is very charging to say the least.

The team itself consists of:

Manager: Joseph Szaez
Lightweight: Steven McDonald
Lightweight: Mike Thomas
Welterweight: Devon
Heavyweight: Alec Eaton

Steven McDonald

Steven, who has two professional and six amateur fights under his belt, recently spoke on the phone about this newly organization the other week and I was pleased to learn more about Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts. Steven is happily in a relationship and a proud father of twin daughters ages 10. As I begin to ask Steven questions, he was avid to talk about his organization. One of the earlier questions that I wanted to ask Steven was to expatiate on what does the Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts detail. Steven stated that “it combines boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, full contact, jujitsu, striking, and stand-out fighting” (Steven McDonald). He went on to state that the Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts should premiere in the Golden Isles of Georgia around October 2008. Steven carried on to explain that this will afford him enough time to get all the proper paperwork in order. One of the most significant aspects of this will entail ensuring that there's a medical presence during the fights.

Steven declared that this is a prerequisite due to any life-threatening injuries that may come about so that medical personnel can attend to the bruised fighter straightaway. Another question that I wanted to ask Steven was for him to explain a day in the gym for the team. He stated that the team keeps very long hours of training. Some of the times a day can commence at 6am in the morning and at times it can end around 2pm. As a matter of fact, manager/owner, Joseph Szaez, is a tough ass when it concerns training his team according to Steven. Joseph Szaez pushes Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts’ Fighters to give it 110% while training and during fights. With intense training like the one Golden Isles Mixed Martial Arts is experiencing, this is going to prepare them for anything that comes their way.

Additional question that I wanted to acknowledge was if Steven felt that Mixed Martial Arts was a physical or mental game. He expressed that it is a intermixture of both. One by all odds would need to be fit to be in this sports but one must be able-bodied to "out think" his or her adversary by using a mixture of the Mixed Martial Arts that she or he has acquired in training. When asked what was some of his preferred moves, Steven stated that he relishes using on his opponents “triangle chock, full chock, rear naked chock, and heel hook (which he lost a match too--this type of move)” (Steven McDonald).

When asked about the adrenaline rush he experiences when fighting, Steven submitted, “I actually get my adrenaline rush usually one or two hours before the match” (Steven McDonald). He alleges that once he is in the ring he is ready to take care of business. We also discussed the numerous injuries that he has received while he has been fighting. To say the least, this sport is not for the tame. A person has to be “tough” if he or she wants to go far in this sport.

After speaking with Steven, I was excited about the interview and equally excited about the idea that Mixed Martial Arts coming to Brunswick. Stick around the best is yet to come.
