Gospel Today has always pride itself of bringing our audience the best in Gospel. With recent gospel musical giants that we have featured in the previous months, we are very thankful for this next group for allowing us to interview them online. In February 1993, Gospel Hummingbirds received a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album. This in itself is such a high prestigious honor that to not mention it would be a disservice to them. James Gibson, Jr., spokesperson for the group, coined their style as "Rhythm and Gospel". Check out this interview and discover some of the magic of Gospel Hummingbirds.

Q. What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
A. The possibility of thousands of people listening to it.
Q. What aspect of making music gets you the most discouraged?
A. The expense it takes to make a finished product.
Q. What are you up to right now, music-wise? (Current or upcoming
recordings, tours, extravaganzas, experiments, top-secret projects,
etc).
A. Just trying to promote our latest CD, 'Life Songs', for a possible Grammy nomination.
Q. What's the most unusual place you've ever played a show or made a
recording? How did the qualities of that place affect the
show/recording?
A. The most unusual place we have ever performed at would have to be at the Harrah’s Casino in Reno, Nevada. People actually stopped gambling long enough to see us perform.
Gospel Today: That’s Amazing!
Q. In what ways does the place where you live (or places where you have
lived), affect the music you create, or your taste in music?
A. Where I live or have lived has nothing to do with the music we create. Our music is inspired by our belief and by everyday living experiences.
Q. When was the last time you wrote a song? What can you tell us about
it?
A. The last time I wrote a song was for our latest CD, "Life Songs'. The name of the song is 'God Said No'. It is about a couple spending an evening together and the man hearing God saying “tell him NO!!!”.
Q. As you create more music, do you find yourself getting more or less
interested in seeking out and listening to new music made by other
people...and why do you think that is?
A. I try not to let other people’s music influence what the Gospel Hummingbirds do as far as creativity and having an original sound. I think it is very important that each artist has a distinct recognition.
Q. Lately, what musical periods or styles do you find yourself most drawn
to as a listener? (Old or new music? Music like yours or different from
yours?)
A. I listen mainly to smooth jazz.

Q. Name a band or musician, past or present, who you flat-out LOVE and
think more people should be listening to. What's one of your all-time
favorite recordings by this band/musician?
A. I guess my favorite group of all time is the Temptations. Temptations’ “In A Mellow Mood” is my favorite recording.
Q. What's the saddest song you've ever heard?
A. 'How I Wish That You Were Here' by The Dells.
