Music Spotlight: Qwiet

I make music to break that cycle.

This next artist is not afraid to speak how he feels especially when it comes to music and the current state he believes the music is in currently. One of his main points focuses on how when he turns on the Television, he gets "sick" by what he sees and hears. And it is not just related to music but an overall state of how things are now. His biggest complaint is that we are "assaulted with sexual innuendo and foul language. There are no more musicians on "music television", only sex artists (they are not selling music anymore, they're selling sex). I can't even watch network television without seeing the same things" (Qwiet).

Qwiet states that "I make music to break that cycle. It's the only way I know how. We don't have to be trapped in The Great Deception that is our society. Life can be beautiful. What a wonderful chance we all have to be great. To be happy. To be free.......

That's what "Rhyme + Revolution" is all about" (Qwiet).

Check out this Q & A that Qwiet recently completed for the Magazine.

Q. For any of our regular readers of the magazine (Junior's Cave) who have not heard of your music--Please elaborate on what style of music you make:
A. I make conscious hip-hop music. The beats are generally more mellow with a jazzy soul flavor and the lyrics can be both direct and poetically abstract. Think Public Enemy crossed with Common.
Music Now: I am feeling that....

Q. Describe what made you decide to go into music more specifically why hip-hop--
A. I grew up listening to hip-hop music. It's such a strong form of expression. As I became an adult, I began to notice all the things that are wrong with our society, and I really wanted to voice my opinion about it and let people know that we can change it. I needed a way to get that message out, and hip-hop was a natural fit for me.

Q. Making a presence in the music business today is tough to say the least; What have been some challenges you have had to faced over the years?
A. Being a white hip-hop artist is challenge enough, although some doors have been opened recently with the mainstream success of Eminem and many Caucasian artists becoming highly respected in underground hip-hop. Being white, from Montana, and making positive hip-hop that in most ways opposes the paradigm of "rap music" is whole 'nother story. People are quick to criticize anything that doesn't fit their view of what hip-hop should be, or anything that makes them think or challenge them to make a change. That uniqueness helps me stand out from the crowd though, and the critics don't really bother me. That's something I fully expected to come with the territory.

Q. What role has your fans played on your journey of craving your own niche in the music industry?
A. I don't make music to make money, so my fans are of the utmost importance to me. A few letters saying that my music has changed their lives or helped them get through hard times or understand something better mean a lot more to me than selling a million frivolous records. I love seeing the looks on people's faces the first time they hear it, because they haven't heard anything like it and they didn't even know it was possible.

Q. Music has come full circle especially with the growing amount of artists being discovered via the Internet. What role has the Internet play for Qwiet?
A. I think most independent artists would agree that the Internet is a blessing in that it allows you to reach millions of people you couldn't reach before, but a curse in that there are a million more musicians to compete with. There are definitely a lot of cooks in the kitchen. It just forces you to make your food that much better though because there are less people eating it.

Another thing I would say about the Internet is that it allows artists to connect with fans directly through sites like MySpace. Talking with fans on a personal level adds a unique dimension to the whole experience and provides accessibility that didn't exist without the Internet.

Q. In today's society, our younger generation are faced with all types of temptations and negative influences----for Qwiet, how important is it to be a role model to your younger fans?
A. It means everything to me. I make music to show people that they don't have to be slaves to the mainstream mentality; that life can be beautiful, and is beautiful when you don't let them get you. It's strange when you think about it – "fans" of music that perpetuates sex, drugs, violence, etc. are actually paying money to these "artists" to make their lives worse.

That's what I mean by the line "you'd think that if someone beat you and took your money, you'd hate them for it…" in the song So Beautiful. I just want to provide an alternative and remind people that deep down, we are still capable of being great.

Q. Here is a final question for Qwiet: Where can folks locate you on the Internet including any updates that you would like to share to our audience?
