Music Spotlight: Dee Girard

Dee Girard is a Drummer, Guitar player, Singer, Songwriter from Erie Pennsylvania. He explores truth and creativity!

Indie Record Label's, Manu Cornuta Records, Dee Girard delivers a great hard rocking sound when he performs. In fact, with musical influences such as Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Bonham, and Iommifor, one can hear in his own style some of their music when listening to Dee. Check out this quick Q & A he took the time to do for Music Now.

Q. What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
A. My approach to songwriting is to allow the music to happen. I have learned to get out of the way and just let it go. I never write with the idea that this song is going to be this or that. I just play and see what happens. Then when I listen I am sometimes amazed at the sound I have created. I create subjectively but listen later objectively. It is amazing how slight changes can effect the overall sound of a song. The creative process is very stimulating and exciting!

Q. What aspect of making music gets you the most discouraged?
A. When I listen to a song and the band gets a really cool groove going, I think wow this is really great and then they ruin it by going into a chorus that is pre-conceived and so typical of today's songs. That really bums me out. It's so easy to ruin a good song by trying to be safe and sound like other bands-- What a shame!

Q. What are you up to right now, music-wise? (Current or upcoming recordings, tours, extravaganzas, experiments, top-secret projects, etc).
A. Right now I am recording the follow up disc to Waiting On The Gods. I will definitely put a band together next year to support both discs. I have spent a lot of time practicing with bands just to have it all end in disappointment. That is why I have chosen this route. I can play all the instruments so I have a definite advantage in in the studio. My Bass Player almost never argues with my drummer, My guitar player and singer get along great... I can almost guarantee that this band won't break up. Almost!

Q. What's the most unusual place you've ever played a show or made a recording? How did the qualities of that place affect the show/recording?
A. I recorded a show at my son's tattoo shop "Karma Tattoo" in Erie, PA. There were three bands and they were all so totally different that it presented a great challenge to me to get the sound right. The disc came out really good and everybody was pleased with the quality.

Q. In what ways does the place where you live (or places where you have lived), affect the music you create, or your taste in music?
A. There is a lot of live music here in Erie, Pa-- a lot of different avenues and types of music. I have a severe addiction to live music. I must hear it at least once a week or I go into delirium tantrums. My taste in music is not affected by this. I think everybody just naturally likes what they like. Did you ever hear music that you thought was really horrible just to look around and see some people really getting into it? There's something for everyone and someone for every style. I love that. I think it's great!

Q. When was the last time you wrote a song? What can you tell us about it?
A. I am in the beginning stages of a song right anow. The last one was finished about 2 weeks ago and it's called "Dividing Us". It's about how the economic system in this country and our leaders are slowly dividing us into two classes -The Rich and The Poor. The middle class is not needed anymore. Think about it. I myself am getting poorer every year.

Q. As you create more music, do you find yourself getting more or less interested in seeking out and listening to new music made by other people...and why do you think that is?
A. Neither. What I do is my thing. I am not affected by listening to other music. I do find new music all the time...especially on Myspace Music. There is a lot of really good music being created by independent artists right now. I applaud them for their perseverance and their struggle. They and I do it for the sheer desire to create. God knows there is no money in it and that's ok.

Q. Lately what musical periods or styles do you find yourself most drawn to as a listener? (Old or new music? Music like yours or different from yours?)
A. Nothing in particular. I tend to listen to the newest music out there. I like Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, and Godsmack even though it's really popular. Better than Ezra make really good music too. I'm sure you've heard "Juicy"! I rarely get an old disc out but when I do it's usually Our Lady Peace, Emerson Lake and Palmer, or Inagaddadavita! Ya I still dig that drum solo!

Q. Name a band or musician, past or present, who you flat-out LOVE and think more people should be listening to. What's one of your all-time favorite recordings by this band/musician?
A. I love Kevin Griffin of Better than Ezra. "Porcelain" is a killer song by them. Travis Aaron McNabb is the best drummer I have ever heard. His kit gets an unbelievable sound. I shook his hand and told him I loved his sound last year after they opened for Hootie at Star Lake. It was awesome!

Q. What's the saddest song you've ever heard?
A. MacArthur Park by Jimmy Webb. How could someone leave a good cake out in the rain? It's soooooo sad!
