Have you ever heard something that made you want to take a second listen too? Well, I have in the group JayDashKay. When I recently spoke to the front man of this acoustic band, I was thrilled when Nicholas Sundman, Singer/Guitarist, agreed to partake in an interview for the magazine. Coming from Bourne, Massachusetts, JayDashKay is approaching their music with originality and heart that is missing as a whole from many of the bands today.
Nicholas Sundman- voice, guitar, keyboard, organ, harmonica
Greg Loftus- guitar, voice, keyboard
Tim Perry- bass, voice
Bobby Blegan- drums
Shane Perry- keyboard, voice
The Interview:
Q. What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
A. The fact that it's now so easy to get your music out into the world. You can write a song, go record it, and have it on the Internet right away.
Q. What aspect of making music gets you the most discouraged?
A. Nothing really. I guess maybe Writer's Block.
Q. What are you up to right now, music-wise? (Current or upcoming recordings, tours, extravaganzas, experiments, top-secret projects, etc).
A. Right now we're in the process of recording an EP. We'll be recording a new full length this winter.
Q. What's the most unusual place you've ever played a show or made a recording? How did the qualities of that place affect the show/recording?
A. I guess the most unusual place that we've played a show is at a beach. It made everything kind of sound like hell. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. As far as recording goes, when JayDashKay used too be a solo act I would record my songs in the bathroom of my apartment. It gave everything a nice, warm tone.
Q. In what ways does the place where you live (or places where you have lived); affect the music you create, or your taste in music?
A. The weather is really shitty for 8-9 months out of the year so it gets kind of depressing here at times. That's usually when the bulk of my songs are written.
Q. When was the last time you wrote a song? What can you tell us about it?
A. About two weeks ago. It's called “Folie a Duex” and it's about a girl back in the early 1900's that runs away with a traveling carnival.
Q. As you create more music, do you find yourself getting more or less interested in seeking out and listening to new music made by other people...and why do you think that is?
A. I would say I'm getting less interested. Every once and a while I'll find new act or musician that I really like but, for the most part, I feel like everybody's just pumping out a bunch of shit these days.
Q. Lately, what musical periods or styles do you find yourself most drawn to as a listener? (Old or new music? Music like yours or different from yours?)
A. Country and old folk. I've really been into Loudon Wainwright III and Waylon Jennings lately. Also, Daniel Johnston. I think that he's a genius that never got to blossom.
Q. Name a band or musician, past or present, who you flat-out LOVE and think more people should be listening to. What's one of your all-time favorite recordings by this band/musician?
A. Jeff Tweedy. Everything that he does is amazing. Every Wilco album is flawless as well as his solo recordings. My all-time favorite recording by him would be Wilco's "Summerteeth".
Q. What's the saddest song you've ever heard?
"The Biggest Lie" by Elliott Smith.
