Google R&B music, and see the numerous hits that one gets regarding the origins and meanings of this musical genre. We all know though that R&B music is all about soul. This next featured artist, JRU (pronounced DRU), epitomizes soul and therefore fits the definition of R&B music; therefore, JRU's musical background and his ambitions are what make him a strong candidate for our monthly music spotlight.
Several weeks back I had the pleasure to do an online phone interview with JRU and was delighted to see that this gifted singer/songwriter/dancer is a down to earth type of guy.
Isaac-Joseph: Thank you for doing this interview for Juniorscave.com. I wanted to start off this interview by asking you; how did you first entered into the music business?
JRU: It was actually around the time I was 6 years old. I saw a Michael Jackson’s performance that yielded me to want to do this as a living. When I saw him performed, I was instantly hooked.
Isaac-Joseph: How long have you been performing professionally?
JRU: I would have to say that I have been performing professionally for about 5 years.
Isaac-Joseph: What have been some pitfalls that you have encountered with the music industry so far? And how have you been able to over come them?
JRU: I would have to say the biggest pitfall for me has been working with the correct production and management team that would fit my style. I was at a stand still for 3 years of nothing happening for me. It was not until I changed venue/management team that I actually started seeing a difference. I stayed focus because I am a very spiritual person who knows that I can make it through my hard work.
Isaac-Joseph: Who have been some of your influences?
JRU: I would have to say that Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Sam Cooke will stand out the most for me because of what they have contributed to the music industry and their deliverance of their music. I am also a big fan of John Legend right now. His style and smooth melodious voice is something that is attracted to me as an artist. I am pretty much a smooth brother so my music definitely comes across in that manner.
Isaac-Joseph: As far as collaboration goes, who would be the ideal candidate for you to team up with?
JRU: Lil Wayne is most def hot at this moment. I am a huge fan of his style of music and would love to do collaboration with him. Now since I love the ladies I would say that as far as a female artist goes it would be a toss between Beyonce and Rihanna. I love them both for obvious reasons, and they are full of energy.
Isaac-Joseph: What are your feelings before you go on stage?
JRU: (laughing) Don’t Fall. But, really, I have a sense of freedom when I am on stage. I love it so much that I feel that I am unstoppable while I am performing.
Isaac-Joseph: How important is having a clean image for you as an artist?
JRU: VERY. It is especially important for those fans 16 and under. My main thought is that I don’t want to lose my soul and get caught up in the worldly things.
Isaac-Joseph: Describe a day in the Studio:
JRU: A day in the studio? Well, let’s see. I am very focus when I am in the studio and don’t clown around. I am there to get the job done. Don’t get me wrong I am not serious all the time while I am in the studio but I don’t play around either.
Isaac-Joseph: How has your family play in supporting you with your career?
JRU: I have a very supportive mom and dad. In fact, when I first started off, I was stronger as a dancer than as a singer so I would focus more on that aspect of my talents. As my voice matured, my voice came into form and now when I am dancing a lot my dad will say, “You know you can sing too?”
Isaac-Joseph: What is the major difference between the music scene from Louisiana and Atlanta?
JRU: I love Louisiana. But, the women in Atlanta are too fine. Plus, I feel that working with the cats out here in Atlanta; they are more open-minded.
Isaac-Joseph: Talk about other projects you are working on.
JRU: I can been seen in A Good Man is Hard to Find and Mamma I want to Sing.
Isaac-Joseph: Last Thoughts
JRU: I can’t do anything without God who has blessed me with this talent.
