ROB OWEN | ||
Singer/Songwriter Rob Owen has an amazing voice with lyrics that really spotlight his musical talents. Rob truly embellishes the term musician with his distinct sounds and powerful vocals that will sure to delight fans young and old. One of his first singles not yet released, “Let Just…” clearly shows us that he is doing what he is meant to do; sing. Rob took the time from his hectic schedule to complete an online interview with Junior’s Cave. Here is what developed.
Isaac-Joseph: Briefly describe how you entered into the music industry.
Rob Owen: Well Wikipedia defines the “music industry” as this:
The music industry is the business of music. Although it encompasses the activity of many music-related businesses and organizations, it is currently dominated by the "big four" record groups, also known as "the major labels"/"the majors" — Sony BMG, EMI, Universal and Warner— each of which consists of many smaller companies and labels serving different regions and markets.
Because I’ve never signed with any of the “big four” I guess I havn’t entered the industry.
Isaac-Joseph: What is the most rewarding aspect to making music currently for you?
Rob Owen: Writing music is rewarding in and of its self.
Isaac-Joseph: What has discouraged you the most about making music?
Rob Owen: I’d say the corruption of the industry. I’m sure I have millions of people backing me on this one. But, most of all though, it is the effect this corruption has on the ones who create the music. It definitely affects the intent of the song. Meaning, the writer‘s original intent could have begun with something that truly held meaning to him/herself. Once the “I’m going to get signed” voice jumps in the song can tend to lose its original nature.
Isaac-Joseph: Do you have a personal philosophy about music? If so, what is it?
Rob Owen: That’s a very broad question. I’m not sure where to begin!
Isaac-Joseph: When you are performing live in front of an audience, what are the thoughts that are running through you head?
Rob Owen: There usually are none.
Isaac-Joseph: Why is being an independent musician important to you?
Rob Owen: FREE WILL!
Isaac-Joseph: Do you think the Internet has altered the path of music as an industry? If so, how?
Rob Owen: It most certainly has. It is a double-edged sword, though. On one side, all of the sudden everyone and there mom can write a song. On the other, it has brought indie artists to the front line because we need not rely on major label for distribution. The fans are picking up on this too. So much change has happened in so little time.
Isaac-Joseph: Any advice for other musicians out there when it comes to using the Internet as a medium for getting their music heard to the masses?
Rob Owen: Download your music everywhere possible to be heard! At the same time, listen to others who have done the same.
Isaac-Joseph: What kind of recording software do you use?
Rob Owen: Pro tools and Q base.
Isaac-Joseph: I know that everybody has his or her idea of a dream artist, someone who for whatever reasons that person would just love to listen to and admire. As an entertainer yourself, if you could play with one of your "dream" musicians, anyone at all, who would it be and why?
Rob Owen: I wouldn’t mind writing a tune with Beethoven.
Isaac-Joseph: What are you hoping to gain from your experience of being a musician and making music?
Rob Owen: Truthfully, I do not expect to “gain” from an experience. I simply experience “being” as a songwriter. Although speaking in the context of epistemology, I guess I’d gain direct knowledge of the phenomenon of music.
Isaac-Joseph: What are you hopes for your music in the year 2008?
Rob Owen: I’d like to sign with one of the “big four!” Kidding. I’d like to keep doing what I’m doing.
Isaac-Joseph: This is our Shout Out time. Please give props to anyone and everyone that matters the most to you.
Rob Owen: My wife Tierra, you are my Goddess. Thank you to my listeners you are very supportive and I’m happy I’m able to connect with you. Please keep writing me. You inspire me.
A Big thanks goes out to Damon Danielson and Andy Z too.
Isaac-Joseph: This is Shameless Plug time: Give us some updates on new releases and other projects in the works.
Rob Owen: I have two new singles. Please go to www.robowenmusic.com for one of them. You can hear the other single that was just signed onto an indie compilation at www.myspace.com/robowenmusic.
Isaac-Joseph: Final Thoughts:
Rob Owen: Thank you for this opportunity Isaac.
