Sarah Burgess

Being one of 173 contestants, out of a pool of over 120,000, to be selected to go to Hollywood and compete in Fox's American Idol has not stopped the extremely talented and beautiful Sarah Burgess to continue to work hard in realizing her musical dreams.

Take one listen to Sarah's music and you will fall in love with this songwriter/singer whose mixture of pop, soul, and R&B blends nicely together. Check out this One on One conversation via electronic mail that Junior’s Cave Music Now recently had with the entertainer.

Isaac-Joseph: Give us a run down on how is Sarah Burgess doing:

Sarah: Well, right now I'm sick with bronchitis, but I'm getting better. I'm excited about the new album, though, I'll tell you that!

Isaac-Joseph: I wish you a speedy recovery!

Isaac-Joseph: At this moment, what aspect of making music excites you the most right now?

Sarah: Having actual, professional recordings of myself, and all the great feedback I'm getting from the people who are hearing them!

Isaac-Joseph: How about what aspect of making music gets you the most discouraged?

Sarah: The amount of time it takes to get an album out. There are so many people involved, and their schedules all need to be coordinated. It's much more time-consuming than I thought it would be.

Isaac- Joseph: Your big break can when you were one of 173 contestants, out of a pool of over 120,000, to be selected to go to Hollywood and compete in Fox's American Idol. Describe that feeling when you realized that you were going to Hollywood:

Sarah: I finally realized that my dreams were coming true, and that I had a chance to be the next American Idol. There are corners in life that you turn, and realizing that its happening is very overwhelming. People have told me they think my crying was fake after the audition, but it wasn't. I just couldn't help myself.

Isaac-Joseph: Your new album entitled “One” is being released. What has been the most rewarding aspect of getting this album completed?

Sarah: You put all the pieces together, and sometimes you don't hear it all together until the very end. I find it very rewarding when the song is so much more at the end than when it began. It's really exciting to hear the final mixes; it's just like hearing it for the first time!

Isaac-Joseph: What's the most unusual place you've ever played a show or made a recording? How did the qualities of that place affect the show/recording?

Sarah: I guess the most unusual so far has been the Colorado State fair with Chris Daughtry. It was a huge arena - bigger than I had ever sung in before, and it was very intimidating. But in the end, it was a huge rush. I can't wait to do it every night!

Isaac-Joseph: In what ways does the place where you live (or places where you have lived), affect the music you create, or your taste in music?

Sarah: Growing up with my dad gave me a lot of exposure to 70's and 80's music. He let me hear things growing up that I wouldn't have been exposed to if I just listened to the stuff everyone else was listening too.

Isaac-Joseph: When was the last time you wrote a song? What can you tell us about it?

Sarah: I wrote a song about Jesus that I sang for my mom, but that one won't be on the album. Hopefully my next album will have some of my songs on it.

Isaac-Joseph: As you create more music, do you find yourself getting more or less interested in seeking out and listening to new music made by other people...and why do you think that is?

Sarah: I'd say neither. I like listening to new music, but I think sometimes people get obsessed by the latest trend. When you're creating something that's a part of yourself, you can't go by what's trendy. But, you can't ignore current music either. You have to go with your heart, and try to keep a balance. That doesn't really answer the question, does it? I guess I could say that I'm always interested in what the Idol contestants put out, because I want to see how they've progressed.

Isaac-Joseph: Lately, what musical periods or styles do you find yourself most drawn to as a listener? (Old or new music? Music like yours or different from yours?)

Sarah: My tastes are so varied, I'm not sure I can come up with just one. I listen to early R&B, 80's, punk, metal, almost anything. I really find myself drawn to music as a whole, rather than just one emotion. Music is just too Chris Daughtry yourself. I love big pop ballads, but if you listen to just that too much, you may miss out on Public Enemy, or Chris Daughtry.

Isaac-Joseph: Name a band or musician, past or present, who you flat-out LOVE and think more people should be listening to. What's one of your all-time favorite recordings by this band/musician?

Sarah: Stevie Nicks, no question. Sarah is my favorite song by her, and we may be sneaking a version of that song into the live set.

Isaac-Joseph: What's the saddest song you've ever heard?

Sarah: Love Hurts, by Nazareth. It's made even sadder by the way Dan McCafferty, their singer, sang it. No one else should ever sing that song. You know, you don't hear sad songs much lately. Maybe people have been turned off of them by bands that don't seem to sing them genuinely.
