Q. What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
A. I'd have to say figuring out which instruments to use is one thing I enjoy the most right now. I like my songs to be rich with different instruments. It creates a really unique and fun sound.
Q. What aspect of making music gets you the most discouraged?
A. Quite honestly, I can't think of anything that discourages me about making music.
Q. What are you up to right now, music-wise? (Current or upcomingrecordings, tours, extravaganzas, experiments, top-secret projects, etc).
A. Right now, I'm very busy promoting my debut release. I'm also writing a few songs here and there, but the promotion takes up a majority of my time.
Q. What's the most unusual place you've ever played a show or made arecording? How did the qualities of that place affect theshow/recording?
A. I can remember when I was playing with a very popular group in my hometown called the Rhonda Romero Project. We played at a ton of places, but once place in particular was a bar that had an extremely limited amount of space for our band. We had a bass player, a guitarist, Rhonda on vocals and guitar, and me on the drums. Just imagine trying to squeeze all of those instruments in a small corner! It was a unique experience.
Q. In what ways does the place where you live (or places where you havelived), affect the music you create, or your taste in music?
A. The city that I live in doesn't support smooth jazz as much as you would think. It's a fairly small town. Being a businessman, I'm setting out to make the Internet my platform. Nonetheless, I've always loved smooth jazz.
Q. When was the last time you wrote a song? What can you tell us about it?
A. I wrote a song about a day ago. I was sitting in my office playing my keyboard and the idea just seemed to come out of nowhere. It's very classy, very smooth, and upbeat. Maybe one of these days you'll hear it on one of my later projects.
Q. As you create more music, do you find yourself getting more or less interested in seeking out and listening to new music made by other people...and why do you think that is?
A. I actually find myself listening to other people more. Norman Brown is my all-time favorite smooth jazz artist. I can't get enough! Seriously, I listen to all kinds of music because while it's enjoyable to listen to, I get a lot of ideas listening to others.
Q. Lately, what musical periods or styles do you find yourself most drawn to as a listener? (Old or new music? Music like yours or different from
yours?)
A. To tell the truth, the older smooth jazz catches my attention. However, at the time, the newest releases are what I usually look for. I listen to many styles of music if it's new.
Q. Name a band or musician, past or present, who you flat-out LOVE and think more people should be listening to. What's one of your all-timefavorite recordings by this band/musician?
A. Norman Brown is my favorite artist, period. He's been my biggest influence as well. Extremely talented! Although his newer releases are good, his older releases are his best in my opinion. His best album hands down is "After the Storm." Ask any Norman Brown fan the same question and they'll tell you the same thing.
Q. What's the saddest song you've ever heard?
A. The saddest song? Wow. There's a song by Kirk Franklin (I don't recall the title) but it talked about all the things he went through when he was a child. That would have to be the saddest song I've heard.
Jason Carroll: Thank you for the amazing opportunity for me to share some of my thoughts with you.
Special Thanks to Jason Carroll for setting this up for the band.
