New Music Spotlight:
Spirit Machine

Spirit Machine

I recently had the pleasure to speak via email with Paul Isaac, lead vocals, about setting up an online interview with his band, the Miiami Beach’s based group Spirit Machine. One of the most noticeably attributes about the band is their style. It is a cross between the Cure and retro 80’s. What’s even more remarkable is that the band is doing something that is hardly seen now; creating their own unique sound. With the age of clones arising, it is refreshing to hear bands such as Spirit Machine taking a chance at making music that has its own unique style. Check out this recent interview that Paul Isaac took the time to do with Music Now at Juniorscave.com.

Q. What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
A. The first window that opens up to that other place. It’s like bubbles of sound and emotional color that creates landscapes and texture. It is like going someplace you never been and exciting like seeing a beautiful girl for the first time.

Q. What aspect of making music gets you the most discouraged?
A. The music business is so lost.

Q. What are you up to right now, music-wise? (Current or upcoming recordings, tours, extravaganzas, experiments, top-secret projects etc).
A. Writing words and songs .looking for what’s next. The energy in my generation hanging out with models who live next door …. blah blah blah! Going to do some electric show with beats and guitar at various Miami Beach clubs.

Q. What's the most unusual place you've ever played a show or made a recording? How did the qualities of that place affect the show/recording?
A. We played in New York at CBGBS. There were lots of ghosts hanging round (btw, worst toilets in New York). We recorded at Rhumbo Studios in L.A... I had hurt my back. I was singing lying on pillows on the floor. We were recording. I remember I had a glass of water next to me on the wood floor and it started shaking; there was a small earth quake. It captured a unique emotion.

Q. In what ways does the place where you live (or places where you have lived), affect the music you create, or your taste in music?
A. Right now being in Miami Beach.; it’s a good place to write songs. I mean it’s so colorful. Every place has its own energy. I have realized that it all is how able you are to receive the songs. I mean the songs are already written you just have to catch them. My state of mind is what is most important. Also, I don't have control of what emotion will be revealed until it appears.

Q. When was the last time you wrote a song? What can you tell us about it?
A. Last night I met a girl with dark hair blue eyes. Something mystified me. It was the things she said. But, it was not about only her. It was feeling a sense of discovery in the impossible ...how powerful one second can be.

Q. As you create more music, do you find yourself getting more or less interested in seeking out and listening to new music made by other people...and why do you think that is?
A. There aren’t many artists right now singing to me. I find myself going back to Bowie [David], Stones [Rolling], Beatles, Who, older U2, the Cure, New Order. I do love Bjorks new record.

Q. Lately what musical periods or styles do you find yourself most drawn to as a listener? (Old or new music? Music like yours or different from yours?)
A. No response given.

Q. Name a band or musician, past or present, who you flat-out LOVE and think more people should be listening to. What's one of your all-time favorite recordings by this band/musician?
A. The Edge plays guitar like no one else does; a real bright spirit. "love is blindness".

Q. What's the saddest song you've ever heard?
A. The song they [The Edge] play on New Years at midnight. It’s so terribly sad.

Special Thanks to Paul Isaac for setting this up for the band.
