Isaac: Thank you for coming back to speak to us Naresh. We have enjoyed working with you over the past few years as your career continues to grow.
We are also excited that you are our 2nd interview under our relaunch of this publication in its new format. Welcome Back!
Let’s discuss a little about your background and how did you get involved in acting and what draws you to want to act?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): My pleasure and thank you for having me back. Well, I have always had a keen interest in the Arts from an early age, growing up watching Bollywood feature films, Hollywood and foreign films. While in school, I thoroughly enjoyed Drama and during my late teenage years I attended amateur dramatics classes. The performing arts realm truly fascinates me.
Isaac: In the films you have performed in up till now, what is your favorite role and why?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): All the roles I have performed to date have been versatile. I’ve gone from playing a very dark, corrupt Detective named ‘Sleaze ‘in Pseudo-Blood Of Our Own, a Canadian American Film, to a gentle, idiotic but lovable security guard named ‘Zack’ in the Corner Shop Show for British Television. Those would be my two favorite roles because not only does it show the range of my acting ability, but it was fun to develop characters at opposite ends of the spectrum who are very different from the person I am in real life.
Isaac: Speaking of various roles; what kind of roles have you performed throughout your career? Are you satisfied with most of them?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): I have been quite fortunate throughout my career to have a range of varying roles with well-developed, three-dimensional characters. I would say, for the most part, it has been easy to capture the essence of the character and I’ve been very satisfied with the roles I’ve been in.
Isaac: How different is it to act in a movie?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): Well, even though I am a theatre-trained actor, the skills I learned on stage can be translated to film. To put it another way, acting is acting, no matter what the medium. However, if you wanted a more specific answer: television and film is different from theatre because the audience has never seen the writing. It is fresh and largely written on the fly. Words are being changed right up until shoot times in many cases. Therefore, at a TV/film audition, an actor can make mistakes or small changes without consequence and in theatre there are no retakes.
In TV/film, you will almost certainly be the only person to ever play any given character so what the producers are looking for is some version you. They are looking for the person who fits the world they are creating. No one has played it before so there is no reference point. It is up to you to show them what your part of the story looks like, and if they agree with you, you will get the part.
Isaac: Tell me about an area in which you would like to improve as an actor?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): I truly believe that the learning curve never ends. You are always growing as an artist, performer and actor both professionally and spiritually and you must continue to develop all aspects of the craft.
Isaac: Do you ever think that you could have done a bit better in any particular role?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): As an actor, you are always transforming and building on your craft as time progresses so I actually think I can do better in every project. The day I start thinking that I am the best I will not be able to grow as a person or creative artist. I think this is part of the secret on how every great actor becomes successful.
Isaac: What are your strong points as an actor?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): Every actor has his or her own strengths that catch the attention of casting directors and audiences alike. I would say that I am like a chameleon on stage and screen when it comes to transitioning through the emotional journey of a character.
Isaac: What have you learned from the directors that you have worked with throughout your career?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): I have learned a lot from directors throughout my career and ways to unlock the potential of creative collaboration. Simply put, people work with people they respect and appreciate. Punctuality and professionalism are qualities the best collaborators – and by extension, the best filmmakers truly appreciate. Oh, and being sure that you check your ego at the door.
Isaac: What have you learned from your senior actors?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): Senior actors are some of the best teachers. They preach patience and professionalism. Focus and discipline. Go on sets with a clean heart and soul and just dive in. If you want to be respected, there is no space for tantrums in this industry. Egos should be left at the door, (unless your role requires it lol.) Acting is like an ocean. If we bind ourselves in chains, we are bound to drown. Read your scripts, study them well and work hard on your characters.
Isaac: From where have you learned acting?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): I have learned acting mostly in England and New York City.
Isaac: Do you think that you have matured as an actor?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): If you aren’t maturing as an actor, there’s no place for you in this business. I believe if you truly want to be a master at your craft, you must continually learn and grow.
Isaac: You got your start as an international model? Are you still modelling and do you miss it (if you are no longer doing it)?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): My main focus is on acting, writing, and directing as well as producing projects that I am passionate about through my Production company See In Color Productions. But, if a great modeling opportunity comes my way, I definitely wouldn’t turn it down!
Isaac: What has been your biggest achievement in the field of acting?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): I still believe I have not reached the pinnacle of my success and until then I will continue to work hard on my goals and aspirations.
Isaac: What kind of roles do you prefer?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): I am a versatile actor, and I prefer roles that are dynamic and challenging. If you want longevity in the industry, you don’t want to be compartmentalized into only one type of role. I’m interested in roles that will allow me to explore different dimensions of creativity.
Isaac: Give me a few tips to being a successful actor?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): I truly believe that the bridge between your dreams and reality is hard work, dedication, patience, and perseverance. Believe in yourself and have an indomitable spirit.
Isaac: Who is your favorite actor?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): There are so many phenomenal actors that I can’t just choose one. But to name a few, I really admire Marlon Brando, Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Al Pacino, Robert Deniro, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Tahir Rahim, and Viola Davis.
Isaac: Great iconic names you just mentioned there my friend.
Isaac: Are you working on any current projects for 2017?
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): I am working on several independent projects at the moment: and two feature films via my production house, See In Color Productions, and a feature film about ice hockey in conjunction with Infantry Pictures.
Isaac: Thank you once again and we are looking forward to seeing you in our new projects.
Naresh Kumar (Naresh K): Thank you Isaac! It’s always a pleasure.
