Perhaps one of the best sounding bands out there currently in the music industry the United Kingdom band, The Exits, promises to win over your heart. With a very solid distinct sound, The Exits are making fun music with catchy lyrics. Check out this recent interview that Mike Keating (Guitar, Synth, Programming) took the time to provide for Junior’s Cave.
Band Members:
Ray Charlton (Vocals,Guitar, Synth)
Mike Keating (Guitar, Synth, Programming)
George Austin (Bass, Synth, Programming)
Tom Poulton (Drums)
Isaac: What's the name of your band? What's the origin of that name? Have you changed the band's name before?
The Exits: We are The Exits!
The Exits: When we first started out and were trying to come up with a name, we all made a list of possible names and The Exits was basically the best of a bad bunch.
Isaac: What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
The Exits: We come under the very broad banner of indie. But we are certainly not a run of the mill guitar band. We have an upbeat, electronic sound which gives us a 'dancey' edge.
The Exits: We are greatly influenced by other bands with this sort of sound, such as Primal Scream, Kasabian and The Music. But we also draw a lot of influence from other genres, like house music, soul and rock.
Isaac: How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?
The Exits: The band has been together for about 4 years. Tom, George and me have played together in previous bands and then through sheer boredom, started playing together again. Ray was introduced to us by a friend. We know after about 5 minutes we had found our frontman.
Isaac: When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?
The Exits: See Answer above.
Isaac: Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
The Exits: We mainly play around the south and London, but we have wondered into Wales for a couple of gigs and we are currently planning our assault on the north of England.
We have played some good gigs at some good venues over the years but one that particularly stands out is when we played at the Primal Scream end of tour after show party at the Brixton Jamm in London. The place was absolutely packed and we blew the roof off!!
In terms of least favorite venues, any one with poor sound; a band lives and dies by its sound. Bad sound in a venue, or a bad soundman for that matter, can make a great band sound very average.
Our next gigs are:
Thursday 14th August 2008 - Express FM Live Session
Friday 15th August 2008 - Hope & Anchor, London
Sunday 17th August 2008 - Criminal Records 4th Birthday, London
Wednesday 20th August 2008 - Dublin Castle, London
Friday 12th September 2008 - The Soul Cellar, Southampton
Sunday 14th September 2008 - Drift Bar, Southsea
Thursday 25th September 2008 - Blow Up Metro, London
Isaac: Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list?
The Exits: We always change our set around but there are usually 3 or 4 songs that will always be included. Songs like 'You Gotta Help Me Out' and our new single 'Neon City' will always make the list. It would get quite boring to play the same set all the time.
The Exits: We generally don't play covers, although we did a version of The Eurythmics' 'Sweet Dreams'. It was a bit of a stormer actually!
Isaac: Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?
The Exits: Most of the songs are written as a joint effort. Someone will bring an idea to the table and we will jam it and work it out together. Although sometime George, Ray or me will work out a song more at home and then bring it to the rest of the band in a more complete state.
The songs are basically about live and love.
Isaac: What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?
The Exits: We practice every Tuesday night, pretty much without fail. We have a good work ethic and make sure we make the most of the time.
Isaac: How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
The Exits: Our sound has changed dramatically since we first started out, but the band has really evolved with the introduction of new technology. The first synth gave us new direction into a more electronic sound, the second synth and third synths allowed us create a massive wall of sound and replace some of
the guitars. When we started to use a laptop as well, it gave us the ability to unleash an army of synths and samples with our tunes.
Isaac: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
The Exits: The challenge is trying to juggle the band and normal everyday life. We all work, we all have girlfriends, we have social lives outside of the band, and it’s finding time for these other things while still putting everything into the band.
Isaac: What's your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
The Exits: Of course we want to be successful, but that certainly isn't what drives the band. Above all we enjoy making music, and playing live, and having a laugh with it. And if we can make a few quid along the way, then all the better.
Isaac: How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
The Exits: Check out our MySpace page (www.mypsace.com/theexits). You can listen to the tunes from our new EP, and it’s got all the latest news, info and upcoming gigs.
Or you can sign up to our mailing list on our website (www.theexits.co.uk).
Isaac: Any last words?
The Exits: Check out the MySpace. Buy the single. Come to the gigs. Listen to us on the radio. Watch our video. Buy yourself a t-shirt.
And we will love you forever!
