D/R Period presents Trew ... | ||
Do you believe that Hip-Hop is dead? Are you thinking that there aren’t any new original Hip-Hop acts around? Well, we have someone that will definitely change your mind. Based out of Prince George, VA, the 27 years old performer, TREW, will have you believing that Hip-Hop is NOT going anywhere. Music Now presents an exclusive with Trew.
Q. What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?
A. Making music always excites me because of the creative process. I’ve always been big on the arts ... I even play a few instruments.
Q. What aspect of making music gets you the most discouraged?
A. The politics. Everybody knows everything about everything. Sometimes it feels as if everyone wants to be a critic and not a fan in hip-hop.
Q. What are you up to right now, music-wise? (Current or upcoming
recordings, tours, extravaganzas, experiments, top-secret projects,
etc).
A. My album D/R Period Presents Trew …... The Big Chill just came out and I also have my own Indie label Inner Circle Entertainment. I’m just trying to get everything off the ground and running for myself and artist Simon P Ciandress Jacob Lotto and Louis Rideout.
Q. What's the most unusual place you've ever played a show or made a
recording? How did the qualities of that place affect the show/recording?
A. I performed in California in a basement during an art exhibit … the vibe was crazy … it was just me free styling but the crowd was into … very intense.
Q. In what ways does the place where you live (or places where you have
lived), affect the music you create, or your taste in music?
A. I’m in Virginia … and it’s like a mix of east coast and down south music. I think it helps me keep the music soulful and lyrical at the same time. I travel a lot too … so I listen to everything.
Q. When was the last time you wrote a song? What can you tell us about
it?
A. I write everyday … poetry, music, ideas, scripts. whatever … but I can’t let all my project ideas out yet – [laughs].
Q. As you create more music, do you find yourself getting more or less
interested in seeking out and listening to new music made by other
people...and why do you think that is?
A. The more I create the more I want to learn and explore so I become more in-depth with my creativity.
Q. Lately what musical periods or styles do you find yourself most drawn to as a listener? (Old or new music? Music like yours or different from yours?)
A. Hip-hop …the early 90’s, that’s where 75 % of my inspiration comes from … and also the Motown era. I grew up listening to the oldies in the kitchen while my mother cooked … so that will forever be a huge influence on me.
Q. Name a band or musician, past or present, who you flat-out LOVE and
think more people should be listening to. What's one of your all-time
favorite recordings by this band/musician?
A. Wow … it’s so many … I’d definitely have to go with A Tribe Called Quest 2nd and 3rd albums. I believe music is a feeling and those two albums just captured my thoughts ideas and feelings of that time … flawless and classic.
Q. What's the saddest song you've ever heard?
A. A Change is Going To Come by Sam Cooke … the track and the lyrics evoke a lot of emotion … it has the feeling of “ I’ve had enough … something else has to be done”.
