Sometimes when you least expect it you find good music that you can’t seem to get enough of. If you are looking for something that you can groove too or shake your hips at? Then I have an artist for you. The name is Tyrangem, an R&B/Pop recording artist, musician, performer and freelance songwriter, who is making his presence known in the music industry. From his auspicious beginnings to his current success, Tyrangem promises to make Tyrangem a household name.
Q. What is your name? When and where were you born?
A. I was born Tyran Darnell McCrae, but my stage name is Tyrangem.
Q. How did you learn to play (sing) this kind of music?
A. Singing has always been a natural ability and gift. I also play the guitar, which I taught myself to play. The primary genre of music I sing is R&B/Pop music, and I grew up listening to Soul, R&B and Pop music on the radio. A big part of my knowledge of my craft comes from being surrounded by Soul and R&B music my entire life. I do periodically practice vocal exercises, specifically when I'm preparing for a studio recording session or performance.
Q. When did you start to learn? (How old were you?)
A. I started singing, dancing and performing at the age of two years old.
Q. Where did you live at the time?
A. The Bronx/New York City.
Q. How long have you been actively playing this kind of music?
A. I have been performing, and singing for over 15 years, starting at about 10 years old.
Q. What is it about this kind of music that makes it different from other types?
A. I consider myself to be an inspirational singer and songwriter. Unlike many male artists today, the focal point of my music is usually not about "bumping and grinding". My angle as an artist is usually about my life's experience, adversity, triumph, and the belief that in every experience in life good or bad, lays a beautiful song.
Q. Are there different styles of playing your type of music?
A. I think that there are many variations of R&B music, some R&B has more of a Pop edge, some is more Soul music based, some Rock etc.., I can pretty much roll with any variation of R&B/Pop music so long as the soul is always apart it the process.
Q. When and where do you usually play music?
A. I am usually playing in New York City at the Village Underground, Soul Cafe, The 169 Bar, Rock 45 Club, etc..., on occasion, I will perform outside of New York city, for example: I recently made a guest artist appearance and performed on a national television show called On Q Live, in Burbank California.
Q. Do you ever earn money by playing music?
A. Yes, I am actually distributing my music on and in a variety of online stores all over the country and abroad. I am also distributing my music at several local mom and pop records stores in the New York City area. In addition, I get paid to perform at different events.
Q. Do you play alone or with others?
A. For the most part, I usually play solo; occasionally I play with a band accompaniment or perform duets.
Q. Are there others in this locale that plays the same kind of music? What are their names and types of musical instruments they play?
A. Yes, some of my industry friends are Twist/Columbia records recording artist Jesse O, and Bill Board chart topping recording artist, Deepa Soul. They play R&B, Pop, Techno Pop/R&B; we all played together at an event in New York city earlier this year.
Q. Have you passed your tradition on to others, who and when? Why is this important to you?
A. Yes, my younger sister loves music as well and wants to pursue a music career. I believe my love for music has rubbed off on her.
Q. What is your favorite song or tune to play?
A. I have so many songs that I love and could never list them all, but, one of my favorite songs of all time is a song by Mariah Carey called Outside. I am usually most inspired to sing late nights, like after mid-night.
Q. What makes a performance/song good? How do you judge a performance/song?
A. I believe that melodic patterns, harmonies, rhythms and strong lyrics are the ingredients that make a beautiful song. I believe that a performer, who is engaged with his or her audience and always maintains a sense of passion and enjoyment in his or her performance, will always get good reception from the audience.
Q. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
A. Please look out for my next single "I Guess”, produce by Universal Records award wining producer, Chiba Antoine, which will be released at the end of November, 2007. Upon the release date, you can purchase and listen to "I Guess" at and on various online stores and radio stations abroad. Come see me perform at the 169 bar here in New York City, November 18th 2007, my performance starts at 9:30 pm. Thanks for your support!!!
